Chapter Three: The Lamiae
Marissa’s POV
I walk in a plop my stuff onto a desk and sit on the one behind it. Ms. Something- or-Another is leaning against the desk and smiles when she sees me. “Miss Jackson,” She says all sweet like, “There is someone who wants to meet you.” I am confused, this is detention not a meet-and-greet. I am about to ask who wants to meet me but my mom bursts into the room saying, “I am so sorry Mrs...”
“Danforth.” the teacher adds, so thats her name.
“Yes Mrs. Danforth. I am sorry I just needed to check in on Marissa. The office told me she was here for detention. I can leave now.” My mom says giving me a “What the heck look.”
“No need Mrs. Jackson, I’m sure my guest would be delighted to meet you too.” My mom narrows her eyes in suspicion. She puts her hand over bag and asks,
“What guest, Mrs. Danforth?” The teacher smiles an evil smile and growls,
“Your death,” The teacher says with a sinister smile. Mrs. Danforth’s legs start to mold together and get longer until they form a snake like torso. Her previously normal green eyes with normal circle pupils morphed into the slanted pupils of a snake. She lungs at me her arms outstretched and her mouth open so I can see her fangs. Even before I can scream my mom throws herself at the creature. They land a few steps away from me and all I can do is watch as my mom slashes and fights off the monster.
Annabeth’s POV
I pulled out my (replaced) dagger and slash at the Lamiae until I have it backed against a corner. It hisses and tries to get to Marissa but I block its path. “Marissa run, go call Uncle Leo, and don’t answer the door to anyone no matter what.” The Lamiae hisses and swings its tail around trying to grab my neck, but I am faster. I drop to ground and roll out of the way. Her claws slash the air where my head was previously and I stand back up in a fighting stance. “Marissa, seriously get out of-” something snakes around my waist and I look down and see the Lamia's snake torso wrapped around my stomach. It jerks and drags me across the floor to the snake-woman. My knife slips out of my fingers and I am left defenseless.
“Any last words daughter of Athena?” The monster sneers as it slowly starts constricting its tail suffocating me.
“Marissa, I love you, now run.” Is all I can say as black dots speckle my vision. Then the Lamiae gasps and drops me to the ground. I can see it look down at its disintegrating body before it poofs into dust. Marissa is holding my knife behind where the Lamiae was standing. The image disappears and I am greeted by darkness as I black out.
Marissa’s POV
The knife clatters out of my hand and I run over to my limp mom. My brain is barely registering what just happened. I feel the tears stinging my eyes but I fight them back. “Mom?” I gasp shaking her by the shoulders. I bend down to listen to her heartbeat and I sigh in relief when I hear it. My fingers are shaking as I pick out my mom’s cell phone and dial my dad’s number. He picks up on the third ring and exclaims,
“Annabeth you have to go find Marissa right now, she’s in danger-” I cut him off by saying,
“Dad, Mom is unconscious and we were just attacked by a snake woman and I don’t know what to do.” the tears are running down my face now and my dad answers. “Ris, honey, you need to call Uncle Leo, ok? I will be their in an hour, curse the gods I wish I could get there sooner. Just stay with your mother and don’t talk to anyone. In her purse there should be a plastic bag with golden-brownish cubes in it, go get that out,” I do as he says and find the ziploc bag.
“Okay now what?” I ask.
“Break off a small piece and put in your mom’s mouth.” I do as tells me and break off a piece about half the size of a penny. I put in my mom’s mouth and ask my dad,
“Now what?”
“Call uncle Leo and tell him what happened.”
“Okay Dad I love you bye! By the way you and mom owe me a full explanation.” He laughs and tells me,
“Okay dear I love you too, be safe.” and with that the line went dead. I dialed Leo’s number and waited for him to pick up. It rings and he doesn’t pick up so I recall and this time he picks up on the second ring.
“Hey Annabeth!”
“Leo, its Marissa. I need you to come pick up me and my mom from the school. We were just attacked by some monster or something and my mom is unconscious.” His normally joking manner sobered up and he said,
“You’re not hurt right?”
“No, I’m fine.”
“Ok be there in ten minutes.” I breath a sigh of relief,
“Thanks Leo.”
“Anytime Ris, gotta go, bye!” and with that the line goes dead. Uncle Leo isn't my real uncle. He is really good friends with my parents though! He doesn’t have a wife or girlfriend. Whenever I ask him about it he gets this faraway look in his eyes and says that love isn’t his thing. All there is to do now is sit and wait.
Leo’s POV
My thought were swirling in my head like a storm. If Gaea’s curse was coming true then Ris wouldn’t last much longer without training. I needed to get her to camp. I grabbed my keys and ran out to my car that I built myself. I felt a pang in my heart when I saw it because I was reminded of her. We were gonna open a mechanic shop together... “No Leo get you head out of the clouds,” I tell myself. I slide into the drivers seat and play with the hot chocolate maker before driving away to Maximum Middle School. Percy and Annabeth lived about ten minutes away from me and I would be there in no time. I could only hope that Marissa would be safe until then.
