That night changed everything. I layed awake in my bed for the rest of the night, trying to figure out how the hell I was going to tell Nancy that I'm not interested anymore. I loved Nancy, but not romantically. Maybe I did once, but now that I think of it, there was never really a spark. Not like the one I felt with Steve. I felt bad for just now realizing this because Nancy didn't deserve to have her heart broken, but it was the right thing to do. Dragging our relationship longer would only hurt the both of us in the long run. I knew what I had to do.

Two hours before school started, I went to Nancy's house. When I got there, her brother, Mike, opened the door and gave me a weird look as if I was there to have sex with her. I ignored it and went to Nancy's room. I knocked on her door to make sure she was at least dressed before entering.

I heard her say "come in" before I opened it. She was surprised to see that it was me who was at her door, but it was a pleasant surprise. "Jonathan? What are you doing here so early?" She asked, walking over to hug me.

I stepped back before she had the chance to wrap her arms around me. She gave me a confused look, so I didn't waste time before delivering her the news. "I came to tell you that we need to break up."

"Wh-what? Why?" She stumbled over her words, clearly dumbfounded by the sudden realization as to why I was here.

I looked down, almost ashamed of why I was doing this. "I have feelings for someone else."

After letting my words hang in the air for a minute, I looked up to meet her eyes. Tears started to well up in her eyes as she choked out, "Who?"

Hating every second of this, I confessed for the first time out loud, "Steve." Her eyes widened, and I could tell everything was falling into place. The night of the snowball, the longing glances shared between me and him. "I'm so sorry, Nance." I tried making it better by offering her a hug, but she slapped my arm away.

"Don't touch me," she spat. "You're an asshole." And with that, she stormed out of the room. I heard her yell at Mike to shut up before storming out of the house.

"That didn't go as well as I hoped," I mumbled to myself.

Steve's POV

"I didn't expect her to take it well at all, Jonathan. I mean, we both dated her." Jonathan had called me, telling me he had broken the news to Nancy. I honestly don't know how he expected her to react. "Did you think she'd celebrate and offerto set up the wedding date?"

I heard shuffling on the other end of the line before he said, "I'm not sure, but I got to go. Will needs me to take him to school."

"Yeah, Dustin needs a ride too," I said before hanging up. Ever since the snowball, I've taken it upon myself to give Dustin rides to school to make up for being an idiot.

After pulling up to his house, Dustin ran out with his backpack slung over his shoulder. Once he got in, I asked, "Ready?" He nodded, giving me a smile.

Five minutes into the ride and Dustin says out of no where, "Are you gay?"

"Gay?" I scoffed. "What on earth gave you that idea."

"Well, Mike overheard Jonathan telling Nancy he had feelings for you. I just assumed you liked him back because he wouldn't throw away a relationship for nothing." He paused. "I mean, it's totally cool if you're gay...or into Jonathan."

Me and Dustin had formed a pretty good bond over the past few months, so I trusted him. "I'm not gay. Am I into Jonathan? Between you and me, yes. I, uh, really like him." For some reason, talking about my feelings for him made me flustered, which I hate.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a smile grow on Dustin's face. "That's awesome! Are you two going to be a couple and go on dates and stuff?"

I chuckled at his enthusiasm. "I honestly don't know at this point, Kid." We reached his school and I pulled in front to drop him off by his friends. I turned my body slightly towards him and said, "I promise to keep you updated though."

He held out his pinky, and, in all seriousness, asked, "Promise."

I interlocked our pinkies and nodded. "Promise. Now get out of here. You're making me look uncool."

He laughed and opened the door, said good bye, shut the door, and walked away. I sighed, thinking of what exactly I wanted from Jonathan.
