| chapter eleven: the birthday |

Nikolai woke up surrounded in blood.
His behavior was not often erratic but due to being a vampire he couldn't help the blood shed, it's in his nature. And last night, just like all the nights the last weeks, he'd let the urges take over.

He didn't feel guilt but was thrilled, power ran trough his veins and he felt mighty. He would get away with taking a life, again. No one would get him caught, no one could stop him and that made him feel utterly powerful.

He untangled himself from the red silk sheets and got out of bed and stepped over the body that laid on the wooden floor. He watched himself in the bathroom mirror with pride and then entered the glass shower, to wash off the dried blood that covered his skin. He hummed as the water descended down his body and watched the blood disappear down the drain.

He got dressed quite quickly in a black button up shirt and rolled up the sleeves, matching it with black slacks. He'd always liked expensive clothes and items. His apartment was proof of that, chandeliers and decorations worth thousands of dollars. As a child and early teenager his family could never afford luxuries and their income had always been low. They were always struggling and he despised the rich who looked down on him and lived in wealth while his family could barely afford food. But now he was above everyone, he was the superior and god it made him feel good.

Calling his 'cleaning' lady he left the apartment and drove towards the Salvatore's. Stefan was long gone and had went on some killing spree with Klaus. Apparently Elena still wanted to celebrate her birthday. After having so many birthdays he didn't find any meaning in a big celebration.

As he parked outside the house he already wanted to leave, horny teenagers everywhere with loud awful music playing and cheap booze. Did these people not have any class? He hated house parties and always had. As he walked inside some girls smiled at him, he smirked at them and ventured furthered into the house. He walked past Caroline and Tyler, wondering when the hell those two happened. He thought she was still together with Matt but guessed Tyler was fine too. He didn't really care since it's not his business anyways. He hoped he wouldn't bite her cause Klaus would probably not willingly give them the cure and knowing him, the cost would be huge.

He hurried trough the crowd, disgusted by the partying teens, all too loud and touchy. He swore if someone spilled on him this would turn into a death party.
He ran into a very stoned looking Matt then found Damon and Ric out on the terrace.

"How did it go down in Tennessee, did you find the latest victims?" Nikolai asked. Klaus and Stefan had left a lot of bodies after them and the others where persistent in tracking the ripper vampire.
Elena was completely oblivious to Stefan's part in the killings and for some unknown reason Damon liked to keep it that way.

"He tore them apart and then put the bodies back together." Alaric spoke, looking slightly horrified as the scene popped up in his mind.

"Sign of regret, pathetic."

"We really need to find him." Alaric sighed, deciding to ignore the previous comment.

"I had this one friend who did the exact same things, you know tearing apart people and-"

"Nikolai, no." Damon spoke and drank from what looked like a whisky bottle. "No one wants to hear."

"That's just rude." Nikolai muttered and walked away. He'd been here long enough for it not to be rude to leave.

The next day he woke up to his phone ringing, he answered it groggily.

"Nikolai I need you he-"

He hung up as soon as he heard Elena's voice and gave the phone a glare as it rung again. He was not so great with technology and had no idea how to silence it or turn it off.

"Please Nikolai! Just meet me at the grill I need to know about Stefan. Damon won't tell me anything and I found his detective board!"

"I don't know anything about that, talk to Alaric. He might know something." He spoke, lying as if it was in his second nature.

"Fine, but I could need your help anyways in finding him. He called me Nik, he needs help. I'll pick you up in an hour and hopefully Ric will go with us." Before he could scream no she hung up.

He sighed and got out of bed, at least it was a way to kill time and it would be fun to ditch the doppelgänger in whatever lace they where going. He got ready and sooner then later Elena stood in the driveway. He jumped inside the rusty car and was met with judging eyes.

"Are you actually going to wear a dress shirt and slacks, we're gonna have to hike? The pack we are looking for is located in the middle of the forest." Elena spoke and he hoped she was joking.

"You can't be serious? There's a full moon tonight and I do not want to get eaten by wolves. I adore them but no and I hate the forest." Nikolai shook his head and was about to get out of the car when Elena slammed her foot down on the pedal and speed away. Alaric gave him a sad look and he sighed.

As they drove a certain calmness washed over him and he watched the trees blur by. Soft music played from the radio and he smiled as they drove towards definite trouble. He did not think this was going to end well at all.
