| chapter fourteen: excitement |

Nikolai sat in Elena Gilbert's kitchen with a glum look, staring out the window in pure boredom. When Caroline invited him to spend some time together he thought it would be just the two of them doing something fun. Not hanging out with Elena and Bonnie, watching the doppelgänger attempting to cook and failing immensely. Damon was handling the insane dad so he had some time to kill, but this was torturous.

"Since when did you learn how to cook?" Caroline asked as she watched Elena while Nik twirled in his chair.

"She didn't learn." Nikolai muttered, he could already feel his taste buds die by just the smell of whatever's in the pot. He was Italian and spent most of his life in Italy, eating good food so he had self titled himself as a food critic.

"Damon helped a little." Elena spoke, clearly ignoring every word Nikolai said, as usual. He frowned, knowing the raven haired Salvatore had a thing for the doppelgänger. God knows he had a thing for Katherine back in the days, every time they met she would talk about the Salvatore's.

"Damon's helping you cook?" Bonnie snorted, looking at the pale brunette with judgmental eyes.

"Stop judging me," Elena spoke, "he's just trying to be a good-" her sentence was cut off as she screamed in pain and a burning sound could be heard.

"Did I splash you." Caroline asked worriedly while holding the pot and Nikolai snickered, starting to enjoy his time at the Gilbert's household.

"No, it's my necklace. It burned me." Elena spoke in a serious tone while holding the necklace carefully as a bright burn mark could be seen on her neck.

"That's some fine jewelry right there, did you do that?" He asked Bonnie who glared at him angrily. He pretended to not see her glare and glanced at his watch.

"Maybe it's a sign that you shouldn't be cooking without Stefan." Caroline spoke in a sultry tone, glancing at Nikolai who held in his laughter.

Bonnie and Elena ignored the two, trying to figure out what was wrong with the necklace. As the witch reached for it it exploded in small electric sparks. The two watched it in shock and Nikolai frowned, he remembers seeing something like it about a century ago. He decided to hold the information to himself for the moment, plus he wasn't fully sure.

"I think the necklace is trying to escape you, and maybe the food too." He spoke and jumped off his chair, walking away while hearing Elena curse at him.

When he was out of reach he immediately called Katherine, knowing Caroline would listen in otherwise and then judge him for talking with the vampire.

"To what do I own the pleasure?" Katherine spoke, the sound of soft music cars in the background.

"Klaus is not very original for being an original vampire. Remember when he tried to find you to kill you by tracking some of your items?" He spoke while noticing a girl staring at him weirdly as she walked by. It was truly strange that not more people in this town knew about the supernatural, it was right in their face.

"Yes, I do remember. Why is that relevant." Katherine already sounded bored of him and he knew her attention would go elsewhere in just a short amount of time.

"He's tracking Elena which means he'll most definitely come back to mystic falls and Stefan will probably panic so you might want to stay far away." He spoke and listened as Katherine sighed loudly,

"I have a plan now don't worry about Klaus and stop bothering me. I always have Stefan in sight. I'll see you soon." She spoke and he listened to the loud beep as she hung up. He knew she was still obsessed with Stefan but he was more worried about her being near Klaus, knowing she wants vengeance.

He understood vengeance but when he acted upon it something usually went wrong. It wasn't calculated or planned and usually ended up in a mess. He likes perfection, not killing in the moment. He only does that when it's necessary or gets a sudden uncontrollable urge.

He put his phone into his black slacks and remembered that there where some kind of event in the town and decided to hide out in the grill for a while. He texted Matt but was ignored, it seemed to be a thing that everyone does lately, ignore him. He talked a bit with one of the waitresses in a tight white shirt who smiled and laughed as they spoke, twirling her hair often and blushing as he gazed at her. He had a way of making people like him, when in reality he usually thought about plotting their death. He wouldn't call it manipulation, in his eyes it was simply pure charm that they naively fell for. It wasn't his fault that they believed him. He could admit to being seductive, but that's just him being Nikolai.

When nightfall came Caroline called him repeatedly and as he answered she was practically screaming, ranting furiously.

"Damon attacked me and tortured my dad and ugh!" She loudly spoke in what sounded like anger and frustration. He frowned and glanced at the mobile device as she kept yelling.

"You want me to kill him?" Nikolai asked, finding it quite reasonable.

"No! What's wrong with you? I don't want you to kill him I just need you to take my side in this. I talk to you later." She sighed in what he guessed was frustration and hung up and he listened to the loud beep again.

He waved at the brunette waitress and she eagerly waved back as he left the grill and ventured out in the dark. By Caroline's word he figured the last hours had been messy and he was glad he'd stayed at the grill, feasting on fries while the others dealt with the annoying stuff.
He knew he had to deal with Damon later but put it off for the moment.

As he walked home he couldn't help the excited feeling that crept up on him. He had a hunch about trouble coming and to him that was exciting. Not the trouble where people argue or does something wrong but the bloody type of trouble.
To him chaos is like an addiction, it makes him thrilled, as long as he's not in the center of it.

He smiled foolishly as he walked down the dark street and past the closed stores, hoping it's about to get messy in the small town.
