Holly's POV
My family left to go camping for the night as it was Saturday. They left me in the house with Bear and Bandit.
Our house is in the countryside so as I look out my window I see some rabbits hopping round as well as some deer in the forest half a mile or so away. I could just about see their beautiful shiny brown pelts and the big strong antlers above their heads.
When I sat on my bed again, I felt pain going through my body. It went away after a minute so I just shook it off. After a few minutes though, it came back again.
It felt like someone trying to push my ears into my head and trying to pull on two spots on tops of my head. I cried out in pain.
My teeth felt like they were being pulled out and my mouth as if it was being elongated. I also kept getting a painful shiver down my spine, as if it was trying to grow and two spots next to my shoulder blades felt like they were going to burst.
I felt hot tears streaming down my face and saw Bear and Bandit running into the room. Bandit came over and pressed his forehead against mine, soothing the pain slightly.
I smiled at him and Bear came over as well, placing a paw on my shoulder. If I wasn't in so much pain, I would laugh at their strange actions. Dogs and other canine animals always acted strange around me.
I could swear a collie in the street bowed to me!
The thoughts were pushed out my head when another wave of pain came. I cried out and Bear and Bandit both took a step back, sitting and watching me.
I know it's weird, but they looked like they knew what was going on.
I felt my bones reforming and just as quick as the pain started, it stopped. I shook my head lightly, swaying on my paw- wait... PAWS?! I looked down and saw small furry grey where my hands should be.
I slowly walked towards the mirror in the hallway, noting that I was only slightly taller than my dogs now.
When I looked in the mirror I was shocked! I was a... I'm not sure. Was I a wolf? Or a bird?
I had golden eyes that flowed and fluffy grey fur. My tail was extra fluffy and looked like it would flow in the wind.
The thing that surprised me the most though, was my back. There were two big black wings, with green tribal sort of markings on them. I tried moving them and watched in fascination as they lifted above my head.
I looked at the other new features and saw I had pink pads on the bottom of my four paws and unusually long claws, as well as a slightly darker muzzle that looked very slim and all in all, I looked like the most aerodynamic wolf that was made to fly.
Then again, I reminded myself while looking at my wings, I probably was.
I wondered how I could go back to my human self...
'Picture yourself as a human' a voice said in my head. I jumped and looked round, seeing no female speaker anywhere.
The voice chuckled and I growled a bit at being laughed at.
'Sorry, dear child. You have a lot to learn. I would explain it all, but I would rather just show you everything.' The voice said again.
After a minute, I was seemingly teleported. It took me a minute to realise I was watching memories and stories.
I saw two adults with blurred out faces. They were clearly my parents, but they definitely aren't the people I've been living with. I saw another baby, a boy, next to me. He was my twin.
Suddenly I felt like a computer, getting documents downloaded into my brain as suddenly I knew everything about my kind. I was a werewolf. And a winged one at that.
I got it from my mothers side. Winged wolves, or lupus volantes (Latin for flying wolf) are very rare. They occur once every thousand or more years. They are born to keep peace in the world and to protect all animals.
They have amazing powers that come every birthday although it tends to vary.
By birthday, I don't mean the day you were born. For a winged wolf you have two birthdays. Your birthday and your shiftday. The anniversary of your first shift.
The first 'birthday' is when they first shift. Winged wolves get the power to shift at will.
The second shift day is the next year. You get the power of flight (unless something happens to make you need to fly).
The third shift day, you get an elemental power. Either fire, water, air or earth. Usually your eye colour gives away your future element. Some people believe a lupus volantes can have more than one elemental gift. This is false.
On the fourth shift day, you get the power to either see into the future, past, read minds or teleportation.
The fifth shift day is when a winged wolf 'matures'. That is the last shift day where a winged wolf will get a power, but every shift day afterwards they will be over protective and if anyone is in danger in a 50 kilometre range, a winged wolf will be there as quick as possible to help.
On the sixth shift day, you get either the power of life, death or you are able to make anyone insane. With the life power, you can bring someone to life. But it takes away a lot of energy and any time you use it you will fall in a coma-like state for a week at the minimum.
For the death power, you can take someone's life at the same costs but for two weeks minimum.
And lastly, the insanity power. You can make anyone insane and it will only take energy to have you out for about three days to two weeks.
When Holly let all the information sink in, she decided to change to her human form. Thinking of herself as a human, she felt her bones reform again and soon she was back to her old self. The only difference was, her skin had no cuts whatsoever. They had all healed!
She was confused though. Her wings hadn't disappeared yet...
'Why are they still there?' She asked what she knew now to be her wolf.
'Your wings don't go away until you've found your mate. You'll just have to fold them against your back for now.' She replies. Holly groaned. She won't find her mate till she's at least seventeen! That's five years she'll have to keep these wings hidden! She put on some pyjamas (her now shredded clothes lay in the bottom of a bin bag) and dropped into her bed, falling asleep after all that energy was drained from her.
