When I walked up the stairs of the Pembrooke, I figured I would be walking into a quiet apartment. I got the exact opposite of that, actually. Veronica and Mom were going at each other's throats and it appeared that they had been for quite some time.

"This is a game of nerves, Veronica, and clearly, you've lost yours!" Mom shouted at my sister.

Veronica glared at her. "I'd rather have lost my nerve than my mind, which clearly, you and Daddy have."

I walked towards them and grabbed the series of papers from the table before scanning them over as Veronica continued yelling. The article in my hands would expose both Fred and Mom for the affair that occured while Daddy was in jail. It would tear Fred apart, inside and out, not to mention ruin any chances for a campaign that would be left.

I looked up from the papers as someone knocked aggressively on the door. Veronica and Mom stopped arguing to face each other at the sound. Usually if anyone had access to the Pembrooke, we knew in advance thanks to Andre. The lack of call from him made me nervous.

When the person knocked a second time, Mom groaned, "Oh, God, who is it?" She looked over her shoulder to see who entered.

Instead of a familiar, friendly face, we were met with a kicked-in door and a burly looking man with looks to kill. Mom backed up towards Veronica and I as the three of us looked on, horrified, as the man stepped on the door and made his way into the Pembrooke.

"You may know my father. Goes by the name Papa Poutine," He barked out, "He told me, if he was ever to be murdered, not to take the life of the man who killed him, but to take the lives of those that man loved the most."

"Mom," Veronica whispered as she grabbed my hand.

"Mija, run. Run!"

The three of us took off across the room and into Daddy's study. As Mom locked the door, Veronica and I shoved one of the arm chairs against it before we backed into the corner. It didn't take long for the double doors to be kicked in, the chair flying across the hardwood floor. As the man made his way towards us, Mom grabbed something from Daddy's desk and aimed towards him.

Four gunshots went off, eliciting screaming from Veronica and I as Mom shot the bullets. My heart pounded in my chest as I watched our attacker fall to the ground, blood pouring from his chest. Veronica gasped for air beside me as she moved to grasp Mom's shoulder. The gun fell from her hands as she stepped back away from the desk.

Ronnie turned Mom slightly so she stood in between us. "Mom, this has to end here."

Mom didn't pull her eyes away from the dead body, but nodded nonetheless. She maneuvered her way around the mess on the floor, pulling both Veronica and I with her as we made our way out of the study.

It didn't take long before Daddy was running up the stairs, shouting all of our names. I sat next to Veronica, my hand still in hers as we sat emotionless at the table.
