If there's one thing I've learned about being a Lodge, it's that family and Spanish are the most important things. No surprise that they were both about to come together for Veronica's confirmation this weekend.

My sister had been going on and on about how excited she was for Archie to meet everyone and it was driving me nuts. Sure, I loved Archie and I was glad he was in Ronnie's life but I felt for him. When it came to extended family, Hiram was going to be the least of Archie's issues.

It was evident to me from day one that even though I was welcomed with open arms by my parents and Ronnie, the extended Lodges weren't so happy. They mainly tried to hide it, especially when my parents were in the room, but it was painfully evident they had no interest in me being adopted.

The worst, was Ronnie's cousin, Sophia. She didn't even attempt to hide her hatred for me, claiming I stole Ronnie from her. Granted, they were family so there really was no stealing involved, but when I was first brought in, Ronnie made it her mission that I was included in everything. That meant, she ditched Sophia to take care of me.

Veronica had always been close to Sophia growing up. They were around the same age and both enjoyed singing so it wasn't a surprise they got along. Sophia never got over me becoming close to Ronnie, which would explain the obvious distaste in me.

So, in all, I was not looking forward to Veronica's confirmation this weekend. I was torturing myself further by sitting on the couch, watching Ronnie get fitted for alterations for her dress. A book had been clutched tightly in my hands for who knows how long as I waited for her to be finished.

The sound of the front door opening made me look up to see Archie run through for the millionth time today. Veronica turned around in her spot, suddenly the attention of everyone in the room.

"Ronnie," Archie practically whispered her name as he took a few steps towards her.

"That hem's high enough, Terry. It's a confirmation, not a sock-hop." Mom ignored Archie's entrance to talk to the seamstress. The woman gave my mom a nod before pushing in the final pin. Eventually the adults disappeared, leaving Ronnie, Archie, and me in the room.

"So, what's this all for?" Archie asked as Ronnie pulled him over to the couch. She sat down on my left side, Archie on my right. I didn't ask before spinning so my head was in my sister's lap, my legs going across Archie.

"Confirmation," Ronnie replied, "It usually happens when you're 12 or 14, but my parents wanted the same monsignor who baptized me, Monsignor Murphy, he's a friend of the family, to confirm me, as well."

Archie nodded. "Wow, so this is a big deal, then?"

I scoffed, my eyes still scanning the book pages. "If that's what you want to call it."

Ronnie rolled her eyes, running her hand through my hair. "It is. Especially to my mom and dad. And, well, my whole family."

I shot my hand in the air, almost whacking her in the face. "Except me!"
