Panic.  Emotions.  Fear.  Storm had never felt how it was like to free-fall, until now.  Wind howled cruelly past her ears.  Willing her eyes to stay closed, to not look down at the island and the volcano that were inevitably growing closer, she tried to spread her wings and glide, but nothing happened.  She was paralyzed with terror.

When she was sure that, at any moment, the ground would slam into her body and she would be nothing more than a mass of crumpled scales, she forced her eyes to open.

"It's better to know whether I'm going to fall into the volcano or not," she whispered to herself false-comfortingly.

But nothing happened.  She didn't crash into anything. Instead, she was floating in the air.  Her wings had unfurled by themselves!  Thanking her reflexes, she sighed a breath of relief and looked down at the island.  A jolt of astonishment leaped through her misty scales, bringing with it the bittersweet memory of her hatching day.
