The Beginning Of The End

My eyes stayed glued to the desk while others walked in the room, chatting and whispering with their friends.

Today was not a good day.

First period and I could tell already.

I had woken up late, stupid alarm didn't go off, and I barely had time to get dressed so I obviously didn't eat breakfast. All I got for lunch was a stupid bag of goldfish that I probably was only going to eat half of anyways because there's barely enough time to do anything in that over crowded cafeteria.

Hey, I'm Jordan, by the way. Yes, I am a girl. My parents wanted to keep my gander a secret when they had me so they gave me a unisex name, even though it sounds more like a guy's name. Whoops.

It's a bit passed the beginning of the school year and I've kept myself out of the drama and gossip since I was little. My parents told me to do so. They specifically said to keep myself under the radar and out of harms way. Why they told me this, I don't actually know. But little do I know, everything was starting to change because of one person.

But let's not get into that right now.

"Yo, Jordan" a familiar voice called out my name. Slowly, dreadfully, I turn around in my seat, and wait for the torture to start. "You look like a mess, did you have that much sex last night?"

Samuel Hector, the bully of this school, and his little gang of atrocities. With him is a kid, about my height (5'4"), who's name is Lenny Weildson, and Tyler Jackson, who's about 6'3". Tyler towered over me, much like Samuel, and I was eye-level with Lenny.

Samuel was known as the bully and the popular girls boyfriend, Lenny was known as his tiny sidekick who's very annoying. Kind of like Batman and robin. Tyler was known all around school as the bad boy.

"Do you have that much shit up your ass that you have to start spilling it out of your mouth?" I said, mocking his tone.

"You're gonna regret saying that to me, you little slut." He said as he pulled out a ruler from his back pocket and slapped my arm with it. I flinched as the ruler made a very noticeable mark on my arm.

This was an everyday occasion. Him saying false accusations, me firing back, him calling me hurtful names, and him then abusing me. I've had plenty of cuts, bruises, marks, from him and Lenny. Tyler never did anything but call me names. He seemed like the 'nicer' one of the group.

They were all pretty strong, being on the football team and whatnot. But that never stopped me from being stronger than them verbally. Samuel is pretty stupid. Failing most of his classes, then either blackmailing, bribing, or threatening the school to get him to pass. His family is rich and rude so it wasn't like the school could do anything. Lenny was a bit smarter than Samuel but he got in a lot of trouble. And Tyler was the smartest of the group. Not as smart as me, although I don't know how great he is at common sense, but he's still one of the top students in the grade.

Just as they were about to say something again, my best friend walks in and goes off on them.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, you dirty bastards?" Liam said to the three other boys.

Liam has been my best friend since we were kids. He's always been there for me and I've always been there for him. My other best friend, Allison, was in another class at the total other end of the school.

"What's this? Got your boyfriend here to protect you? He can't do shit. He's too weak." Lenny said menacingly.

Liam started moving closer to them when I grabbed his hand and pulled him back. I looked up into his eyes, but they were focused on the boys. "It's not worth is, Liam. Just sit, please." I said and he obeyed hesitantly. After a few more words were spat in my direction, the boys left, and I could breathe again.

Let me just explain for a second. I have never hooked up, kissed, hugged, or done anything with a guy or a girl. People say this because a lot of girls don't like me. I don't know why though, I haven't done anything to them. So when these girls start rumors, they immediately tell Samuel, Lenny, and Tyler. Since Samuel's girlfriend, Becca, hates me with a burning passion, she is the one who comes up with a lot of these rumors in the first place. It's not the best life, but I'm used to it so it doesn't really matter to me.

Liam started rubbing my back in a reassuring way while saying, "it's alright. I'm here to protect you." Liam is usually late to class, so by the time he gets to me, Samuel or Lenny has already been bugging me and has already slapped me. Liam only knows about a few times when they've hit me, but it happens almost every day.

I bet you're wondering why my parents haven't done anything to make it stop. That's because they're never around. Ever. They're always on business trips and they don't have time for me. I used to be with my big sister, but since she's in Harvard and can't get distracted, I have to deal with things on my own. Kill me.

"The rules of the English language refer to..." the teacher, Mrs.Torrison, an old lady who doesn't tolerate talking over her or repeating herself, drawled out the lesson that hardly anybody cared to listen to. I took out my phone, hiding it in my lap so Mrs.Torrison wouldn't see, and I looked at my messages. I'm guessing Liam did the same thing because he was texting to Allison and I in our group chat.

Liam: Samuel and his jerk ass friends keep torturing her and it's not okay.

Allison: I know, she doesn't do anything though. All she does is talk back. I wish I could help her more but I'm petrified of them.

Myself: You guys are texting on the group chat. I appreciate your worry, but don't pity me please. I hate when people pity me.

Allison: Liam, you dumbass, you should've checked before you texted. You know I never check where I'm texting.

Liam: Sooooorryyyyyy, damn. Someone's acting sassy.

Allison: Oh shush.

Mrs.Torrison had asked a question from the text book we were given and, obviously, I knew the answer. She asked us why anyone would use the semi-colon in their essays. Slowly, I raised my hand, and she called on me to, hopefully, answer correctly. "Anyone would use the semi-colon to link together two independent clauses that are closely related in though or topic." I said, and hoped that I said it with proper grammar.

"Good job, Jordan." Mrs.Torrison praised me for my right answer and I smiled to myself before looking back down at my phone. A notification popped up for my Snapchat. It read: 'Tyler Jackson has added you as a friend.'

Excuse me? Did I read that right?

I went over it again, and again, reading the same eight words over and over again until I got it through my head that this wasn't just some weird hallucination.

I looked over at Tyler, who sat two rows beside me. He was grinning a little, staring down at, what seemed to be, his phone.

I couldn't help that I was curious, but I'd have to wait and show Allison and Liam before accepting or declining his request, so I screenshot it and send the picture to the group chat.

Myself: Image Attached

Allison: No. Way. There is absolutely no way he friend requested you. He bullies you, every day, since MIDDLE SCHOOL. Why would he try being nice now? That doesn't make sense.

Liam: Yeah, that's sketchy. But maybe he wants to stop bullying you and this is his way of trying to stop? I don't know, boys are weird and senseless.

Allison: We know, thanks to you

Liam: Rude.

Allison: I'm kidding! It's a jokeee

Myself: Should I accept it?

Allison: If you want. If you feel you should, go ahead. And I'm here for you no matter what.

Liam: I'm here for you too, if he tries hurting you, I'll kill him. Not literally, but still.

I contemplated for the rest of the class. Just before the bell rang, I opened Snapchat again.

I went to my friend requests and my thumb hovered over his name.

'Tyler Jackson is now your friend!'
