A/N: This used to be a short story commissioned for a writing contest. It is based on Demi Lovato's song 'Give Your Heart A Break'. I loved writing it so much that I ended up developing it as a full story. I hope you like it :)
A/N: 06Oct2012 xx Title Change xx I have decided to change the story title from 'Never Fall In Love' to 'Kiss The Stars'. I also changed the cover. Just the same...I hope you like it :)
This chapter is dedicated to ilivelovelaughxx for her continued support and encouragements. Thank you mon ami.
Chapter 1 ~ Everybody Hurts Sometimes
“Elle! Hurry up!” Phoebe yelled from her car. She is my best friend and she is picking me up from my house. We are going to a party at this posh new hotel. I am sure the other girls in school will be envious. We got exclusive invites.
I hurriedly grabbed my white jeweled purse and rushed down the stairs in my high heels. I need to wear heels because I am really short plus I think it improves my posture.
“Gabrielle Rose, be careful!” My mother scolded me as she saw me run down the stairs in those heels. I am not exactly clumsy but I have had my fair share of accidents over the years. “Where are you headed? Your Dad is coming home tonight.” She asked as she gave me a look over.
I am wearing a new white short dress with blue and silver jewels upfront. I saw the look once on Nicole Kidman.
“I got an invitation for this new bar opening. Jonas invited me.” I grinned. I definitely have to do some namedropping otherwise I will not be allowed to go. She knows Jonas.
I am used to my Dad being away for long periods of time and when he returns, he only stays awhile. He is a general of the U.S. Army and he gets commissioned to stay overseas. We used to move a lot with him, too. My mother decided to stay put in New York when my brother, Austin, entered high school. She now owns a bakeshop in midtown so that is another reason to stay where we are.
She gave me a disapproving look. “You are never home, Elle. Your Dad is expecting you to be here when he arrives.” She jumped in surprise when Phoebe honked her car horn impatiently. My Mom looked at me pleadingly. “He is only here for a few days. I hope you make time for him.”
“I will but I have to go now.” I said and kissed her cheek. “Bye, Mom. See you later.” I hurriedly ran to the front door without even closing it behind me. I almost bumped into Austin. “Hey, bro. See yah.” He did not have the chance to greet me back. I jumped in the car and Phoebe gunned the engine. I think there will be tire marks in the drive way.
We got to the party just in time. The party is in full swing. One rule Phoebe and I follow is that we never arrive on time but we should never be too late either. That would be so rude to our host. Speaking of our host, he just spotted us from across the bar. Jonas Dixon is the son of the hotel owner. We grew up together which explains why I get exclusive invitations to all their events.
“Elle!” He kissed my cheek and gave me a hug that is longer than usual. In normal circumstances, I would feel uneasy about this public display of affection. I know Jonas likes me. He has told me countless times. I let him be since we are surrounded by our friends. “I am glad you made it.” He gave me a heart stopping smile which he never gives anyone except me. If I were some other girl, I would have melted with that smile.
I think I saw Phoebe glare at me from my peripheral vision. I wonder what is wrong with her. She is here because of me. I gave her the extra invitation because she is my best friend. Jonas nodded and smiled at her. In the dim light of the bar, I think she blushed. Oh my god! She likes him.
