Chapter 3 ~ The Roommate
“Is there an airport nearby or is that just my heart taking off?!” Patrick started with his pick-up lines as soon as I settled on my seat. He winked at me as he sipped his coffee. I rolled my eyes at him and slapped the back of his head. For the past week, I dined with him and Kendall at the dining hall. I also met other students while we share our meals. I am back to being the sociable Elle.
“If you start off flirting early without breakfast, your efforts will fail. Breakfast is very important.” Kendall teasingly wagged her finger in front of his face. “Get the omelet and turkey bacon set. It is really good.” She turned to me as she shoved a forkful of the omelet in her mouth. How she can eat a lot and never gain weight, I am still baffled.
I headed to the food counter and chose the set meal as she suggested. As I headed up the till, I was blocked by a tall figure. I hate being cut off. Then I remembered, I am supposed to be kind, fun and patient. I am the new and better version of me. That is my new mantra. I drew a deep breath and smiled up at the tall figure who I just realized is Patrick’s friend. “Did the sun come up or did you just smile at me?”
Argh, again with the pick-up lines? Seriously?! Did they put something in our food so these boys are spewing out pick-up lines every second? “The sun has been up since seven o’clock this morning, Lucas.” I retorted and stuck my tongue out at him. I handed my meal card to the cashier and turned to leave.
I heard him laugh quietly so I know he is right behind me as I made my way back to our table. Patrick made a face when he saw Lucas following me. “Did your line work?” He asked midway into popping a piece of bread in his mouth. I saw him snatch that bread from Kendall’s plate. She is now glaring at him.
“Nope.” Lucas sighed and slumped on the seat beside Kendall. He is one of the new guys I met in the dining hall. He knew Patrick from the band circuit. They are both into music. They recently formed a band together with some guys. I have been invited to attend their first gig at a welcome party tonight.
Kendall clucked her tongue and shook her head in Lucas’ direction. “I don’t think Elle likes guys who talk too much and flirt a lot.” She pursed her lips and raised her eyebrow at the guys. Bingo! How can she know me this much in just over a week? She stood up and prepared to go. She turned to me. “Sorry, I have to leave you with these playboys. I am meeting my bestie, your roomie. She is checking in today. Finally.”
“OK. See you.” I waved her goodbye. I went to watch the guys practice for their performance tonight. The party will be held at a posh hotel. Kendall and I are going. It will be the first party I will be attending to here in California.
Hanging out with the band, of course I got hit on a lot. I just took them all in stride. I know what I am looking for in a guy. I have not found who I am looking for yet.

I have to prepare for a long night because of the party so I went back to the residence hall just after lunch to take a nap. I found a guy standing by my mini living room.
He is tall, has dark wavy hair and a hot, lean body. He is wearing dark blue jeans, a crisp white button down shirt and black boots. He looks like a cover photo that came to life. He sensed my presence by the door. “Err, hi…” Shit, I can feel my cheeks burning. I have just been caught staring at him.
“Hello, you must be Elle?” He smiled at me and his eyes smiled, too. He has blue eyes that I can drown into. I nodded and smiled shyly. “I am Ian, Cate’s brother.” He nodded towards the other room.
Oh, I have been ogling my roommate’s brother. Just then the door burst open. Kendall walked out first. She was followed by a cover girl who also came to life. I have just about a few seconds to take in her appearance.
