Chapter 2 ~ A New Beginning
I watched my parents walk back to their car. They dropped me off at the dormitory hall which will be my home for the next ten months. Dad took time off from work and flew with us here in California. We spent a few days at a resort before heading to Palo Alto. Just now, he received an urgent call to report back to work. Mom was a little misty eyed earlier. I have not been away from her since day one of my arrival here on the planet. I understand that she will have some troubles letting me go.
I am a jumble of emotions right now. I am terrified at being left alone. My family will be on the other coast and I do not know anyone from here. I am excited at the prospect of a new beginning. I can start over and be a kinder, simpler Elle. I have started to be one after Jonas left but my peers are not exactly convinced. They still think I like breaking hearts and playing with peoples’ feelings. Phoebe’s propaganda against me apparently worked.
I am glad that I am finally away from her. She will stay in New York and attend NYU. We spent our entire senior year bickering and throwing underhanded tactics against each other. It was very exhausting. I offered olive branches to other people I have offended but never to her. She hurt me and most of all, she hurt Jonas. I will never forgive her for ruining my relationship with him.
“Catch!” I heard someone yell and I just had enough time to duck the orange thing that sailed over my head. I glared at the direction of the thrower. I did not mind if the ball was caught or not as long as it did not hit me. The freaking jocks are already showing off.
My eyes landed on a blue eyed blonde guy who was clearly checking me out. His hair is sticking out everywhere, very much like my brother’s hairstyle. I bet he finished a whole tube of gel to make all his hair stand out. His eyes finally reached my face and smiled at me. “Hey, I am Patrick. Need help with your boxes?”
Normally, I would scream and throw a major tantrum when something like almost getting my face smashed with the football happens but I am a changed Elle. I drew a deep breath and smiled back. “Hi, Patrick. I am Elle and yeah, I could use some help.” I motioned at the two boxes and one suitcase near me. Dad helped me bring the other suitcases in my room earlier but he had to go because duty called.
He flashed me his perfect pearly whites again. “Nice to meet you, Elle.” He took both boxes and carried them easily. “Which room did you get?” I gave him my room number. I just hope he does not turn out to be a psycho. I pulled the suitcase toward the elevators. So many people are already queuing so getting up to my room might take a while. “Think you can handle the stairs?” He asked. His eyes slightly narrowed when he smiled at me.
I glanced down at my Louis Vuitton luggage and then at the flight of stairs that we have to negotiate. “Can you handle the stairs with those?” I nodded toward the two medium sized boxes in his arms. He smiled at me again and rolled his eyes. He bounded up the steps and I had to choice but to follow. We need to go up five floors. Oh, my dear Louis will be battered.
“So Elle, where are you from?” He turned to me slightly, probably checking if I was still behind him with my luggage in tow. Wow, he can still chitchat while going up the stairs with heavy boxes on hand. I was already getting breathless and I consider myself fit. I regularly run around Central Park.
“New York.” I said as I sidestep away from a couple sucking each other’s faces by the stairs. That scene looks totally high school. I shook my head absent-mindedly and bumped into Patrick’s perfect bum just as he said he is from Seattle. I felt my cheeks burning. “Oops, sorry.” He is seriously buff. Who can blame me?
