It's been ten years since he last saw you.
Even as children, neither of you were to act like it. Instead, only hard training lied ahead for each of you. It was painstakingly tiring work that no child should ever be forced to endure, yet there you and Todoroki were, proving to Endeavor just how durable the two of you were. Your body never broke but little did anyone know, it was your mind that ultimately shattered to pieces.
Unlike Todoroki, Endeavor was merely your mentor whom your parents shipped you off to in order to train your unique quirk for combat. His lack of relation to you didn't encourage him to go any easier on you, though. He forced you and Todoroki to train night and day together, yet getting outraged when he caught the two of you conversing during breaks. Neither of you ever stopped, though.
In a place as hellish as this, you needed to find solace in a friend like Todoroki.
Three years of training passed by when you heard the news of your parents' passing. Endeavor didn't even allow you to attend their funeral. It was then when you fell into an abyss; everything learned from all those years of training disappeared. Todoroki, who you were once equally matched with in fighting, was now beating you every single time. Not that you cared. You only felt emptiness.
The following year, you were still behaving the same and Endeavor had finally had enough. He realized that no matter how much he trained you, you would never grow any stronger than you currently were. Providing you food and shelter was no longer worth the burden. Just like that, you were kicked out, your only friend in the world taken from you.
Just like that, you were all alone in the world.
Todoroki never forgot you. There was never a day that passed by where he didn't think of you, wondering where you were in the world or if you were even still alive. He missed your encouraging smile you would give him after every intense training session and the conversations he shared with you about becoming future heroes. He could only hope that wherever you were, you were well and fulfilling your dream.
It was only on the day when you were the last thought on his mind that you made an appearance in his life again, just not in the way he ever expected.
It was that fateful day when Endeavor finally brought Todoroki with him to capture or kill a group of villains attacking the city. He and Endeavor easily took care of most of them until only one remained; one that his father left him to handle. He was more than prepared to take the life of the villain until he saw who it was:
You.
He froze. Everything seemed so different about you, not just your age. The smiles and happy expressions he remembered you by were no longer present. There you were, standing on the other end of the street, a blue fireball in your hand ready to set fire to the next thing you spotted, with an emotionless expression on your face. You seemed so empty, nothing like the you he knew from so many years ago.
You raised your hand to throw the fireball when he finally said, "[name]?"
Todoroki was hoping that it was all just a mistake; nothing more than his inner conscience wanting to see you one last time even if you were a villain. To his utter disappointment, he was correct. The fireball vanished at once after he said your name and you whipped your head to the side to look at him, your eyes growing wide when you realized who he was.
"S-Shouto?" you questioned, your voice wavering.
He nodded, his heartbreaking at the realization of who he was facing. You were supposed to be his enemy, yet he couldn't bring himself to inflict harm on you despite the horrible deeds you committed.
"What... What happened to you, [name]?" he asked, taking a few hesitant steps towards you. "Why would you join the villains? Don't you remember all the time we spent training together - how you said you wanted to be the best hero in existence?"
A sad smile appeared on your face in memory of everything and tears threatened to spill from the corners of your eyes. "Of course I remember, but I had no choice. Endeavor abandoned me and my parents were dead. I had no one left in my life, but the villains took me in and gave me a home. In return... well, I helped them commit their crimes."
He took another step towards you, but your eyes widened in fear and you stepped away from him. Todoroki was confused by your actions at first until he noticed the presence of someone beside him and turned around to see his father. Endeavor didn't seem surprised by this new predicament.
"Now's your chance to prove yourself, Shouto," Endeavor said gruffly. "Show me that all your training has paid off by taking her in for her to be punished for her crimes."
Todoroki immediately turned on his father, a look of disbelief and anger appearing on his features. "You were the one who abandoned her when she had no one left to take care of her! That doesn't excuse her for her actions, but you're also responsible for what became of her."
Endeavor's flames flared in annoyance at his son's words. "What I did was necessary for you to grow stronger. She wasn't as strong as you and was only serving as a burden. My course of action may have been harsh, but she was the one who ultimately decided her own fate."
Todoroki's anger surged, but he wasn't surprised by his father's cruelness. After all the years spent with him, he was used to it by now. A few tears slipped down your cheeks which was understandable considering the circumstance, yet the words you spoke weren't what he expected.
"He's right, Shouto," you said, your voice cracking. "I wasn't forced to join the villains; I did it willingly in order to save myself. Just... do what you have to. I'll accept whatever punishment comes my way."
"Get her, Shouto."
His father's words rung in his ears, drowning out everything else going on. His body started subconsciously moving on its own towards where you stood. Both you and Endeavor were right; you chose your own fate, but that didn't mean it was an easy decision for you to make. Self-preservation was a natural human instinct that everyone acts on at some point. Should you really be punished for wanting nothing more than to live when everyone else in your life had abandoned you?
Even with his back turned to him, Todoroki could feel his father's eyes boring into him. Finally prove his father that all of his training has paid off, or save the girl he hadn't seen in years?
The answer was painfully obvious.
He was only a couple of feet away. You closed your eyes and extended your arms, ready to be tried for your actions. Instead, you were met with a breathtaking hug. Todoroki wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you closer towards him. Your body went rigid and your mind screamed at you that this had to be just a dream for this couldn't possibly be happening.
"It's not your fault, [name]," he whispered as he reassuringly rubbed the nape of your neck. "I won't let anything else bad happen to you."
And just like that, you broke down. Your legs buckled, but Todoroki easily managed to support your weight as you cried into his shoulder, letting out all of the emotions you held in for years. In the end, he somehow found his way back to you. In the end, he was there for you.
In the end, he had saved you from yourself.
