If you ask Jeongguk about Kim Taehyung, the first thing he’ll say is he’s his best friend.
Because that’s who he really is, having been born two years after him, the older boy always made sure to look after him. He protected him from bullies, shared his honey butter chips with him, made sure to include him always in his group of friends, and wiped his tears with small kisses when he cried. Taehyung always acted like an older brother, but the boy preferred to be called his “superhero” better. Jeongguk, though, knew that he was his best friend and he will be for a long time.
And he wasn’t wrong, as he graduated from high school to move onto Taehyung’s university, their friendship never subsided. In fact, it even grew stronger since they became roommates (after they both strongly insisted to the RA), and it was impossible to see one of them without the other.
University passed as well, Taehyung graduating earlier than Jeongguk, and the pair may have lost contact for a while (senior year forced him to abandon any forms of socializing and having fun because it’s that cruel) but when it was time for him to receive the sheet of paper he worked hard for in four years, the older had been there to congratulate him with a bone crushing hug, exclaiming, “little Gukkie is all grown up now!”
Jeongguk then stared his training as a cop, while Taehyung worked a job that he never tells him about. Though the two adults don’t spend every day together anymore, they still find time to eat out and spend time together every weekend. In one of their hangouts, they joked about moving in together, the younger actually liked this idea a lot (maybe a bit too much), but the topic never resurfaced again.
So, yeah, Taehyung is his best friend, his superhero, his roommate, his a lot of things. Jeongguk will tell you that.
But what he won’t tell you is that Taehyung is also the love of his life. The first and only one, in fact. He’s known it since he was merely a child, and now that’s he on his twenties, he’s never once confessed his feelings. Because Taehyung is his best friend, and his best friend is straight.
He’s considered it before, heck, he was so close to doing it one time. He’s got his speech memorized, he has a pair of rings hidden in his back pocket, and he made sure to part his hair nicely that day. But then the door opened, Taehyung has a girl in his arms and hickeys on his neck.
All chances of confessing disappeared that day, along with the rings he threw away somewhere out of frustration and heartbrokenness.
But still, Jeongguk can’t just un-love him, can’t simply give up on the older, so he just settles on loving him from afar. As long as Taehyung is happy, as long as he is still his best friend, as long as he’ll stay by his side, his heart can wait.
He loves Taehyung much more than himself, but he will never tell anyone that.
If you ask Jeongguk why he chose to be a cop, he’ll tell you because he’s always wanted to help people.
Currently, he’s a young police officer whose rank is steadily going higher. He’s arrested an impressive amount of criminals, and exposed many of the city’s corrupt activities. His name is a familiar one in the slums, to the middle class men, to the rich, and even to the politicians.
He gets a lot of praises for his deeds, the other policemen eye him with envy but his higher-ups proudly pat his shoulder with the promise of a promotion obvious in their wide grins. He fights crime and helps people on a daily basis, and he will say that he’s currently fulfilling his dreams.
But what he won’t tell you, is that it’s actually because he wants to be like Taehyung. The boy who always stood confident and proud unlike the younger him, scaring away the bigger bullies and making sure little Jeonggukie is always safe and happy.
