Kimball put her finger up to her radio piece in her suit.
"Doyle," she said, "we have Carolina and are at the extraction point. Are you ready?"
----------------------------
"Almost," Doyle replied back. You quickly began working next to Doyle, adjusting things. "Just give me a few more minutes and I-" Doyle was cut off with a 'Found him!' from one of the idiots we were fighting. More like trying to blow up as of current time, but still.
"AAAA!" Doyle shrieked as the man opened fire on us.
"Crap," you said, looking at a portion of controls. Ducking down, Doyle pulled out his gun and shot the guy, who dropped down to the floor.
"Dead as a doornail?" You asked cautiously.
"Dead as a doornail," he confirmed.
An alarm went off in the distance.
"The hell was that?" Barked an angry voice from around the corner, not too far off in the distance.
"Oh no," Doyle said at the same time as you. "No no no..."
"Dear God above help us," You added, just for good measure.
"Doyle, what is it?" Someone asked over the radio. Smoke began to fly out of the control panel. A bit blew in your face, but you swished it away by raising your and batting it at the smoke.
"Doyle," The same voice repeated, "are you ready?"
Doyle stayed silent. You sighed, knowing what was to come. Your leader looked at the weapon on the floor.
"I'm afraid..." Doyle began, slowly and somewhat sadly, "I won't be joining you."
"We won't be joining you," You corrected. Doyle shook his head.
"No. There is still time. If you can run now, you have a fair chance of reaching the Pelican before it-" You stopped Doyle by putting a single finger on his helmet.
"I'm staying."
"But-"
"I'm staying," you confirmed.
Doyle sighed heavily. "Very well," he agreed.
"The controls are destroyed," You told Kimball.
"There's no way to overload the reactor with enough time to leave," Your leader finished for you, sighing deeply once more. "But I can still trigger if I damage the core myself.
"It came from over here!"
"Don't be an idiot!" Kimball barked over the radio. "We need you alive. Just stay low and we can come to you!"
"Kimball, we're surrounded," You shot back, following Doyle as he quickly raced up a set of stairs. "And, somebody needs to be here to pull the trigger."
"(Y/n), this isn't your fight! Get out!" Grif yelled at you through your private radio channel.
"Grif, I'm staying, and that's final." Grif, on the other end, sighed, knowing that there would be no more said about the current situation. "Goodbye Grif." He cut the line. You knew that it would be the last time you would ever see your cousin, and he knew the same.
"It's just as you said. Sometimes you have to risk lives." Doyle gazed over at you, slightly cringing at Kimball's sudden outburst.
"Then let me do it!" She protested. "If Felix isn't in the city you'll be putting the sword right in his hand!"
You moved closer to Doyle, pulling him into a hug. Even without seeing his face, you knew that he too was near crying. "Oh for God's sake, Vanessa, I know it's not perfect...But I'm rubbish as a leader and even worse as a soldier."
"And I the worst medic in all logged history," You added. It was true- you were even worse than Doc. And that was saying something.
Again Doyle sighed, leaning on you. "This, is all I can do."
Picking ourselves up, we ran over to the reactor core.
"We'll finally have a chance, a real chance. And if Felix is out there, I know you can stop him." He got a little quieter with each passing word he said.
"There he is!"
"They've spotted us. The timer on this detonator barely lasts a minute. YOU NEED TO GO." You ordered. Doyle fired the sticky-bomb, and it lived up to its name. It stuck proudly to the glass protector, the heat casting a bright glow off of it.
"God damn it, Doyle, (Y/n)! Stop!" Kimball shrieked. You could only picture the others having to drag her onto the Pelican before the bomb went off.
"Chorus still needs you, Miss Kimball, so when you die you had better be damn sure that those you leave behind can carry on without you." He breathed in deeply. After a few moments' pause, he finally said, "I know I am."
"And so am I," You finished.
Finding his confidence again, Doyle began speaking again. "This is General Donald Doyle, signing off."
"WAIT! NO-" Kimball yelled before the line went down.
You walked over next to Doyle and leaned on him, enjoying your last moments in the land of the living with him. He slipped his hand into yours and clutched it tightly, as you did to his.
"Any last words, General?" Sassed a voice.
"Well..." You started.
"We'd like to quote the great William Shakespeare, but to tell you the truth, I don't think he actually said it," Doyle finished for you. You took off your helmet and breathed in some semi-fresh air, knowing it could be your last any moment.
Another man ran up behind them and aimed his gun. "What the hell is that?" He yelled. All of us looked up at the reactor, and the bomb tickin' away on it. Looking at Doyle, you raised your hands up and raised his helmet oof his head. His dirty blonde hair and his blue eyes had never looked more perfect to you than they did right now.
A kind yet sad smile graced both of our faces. He pulled me into a final hug, pressing you tight against the white and gold trimmed armor.
"I love you," You whispered in his ear.
"And I love you," He whispered right back into yours.
Then, the bomb went off, and the reactor blew up.

Am I the only one who was sad when Doyle died? He was my favorite too.. No one else?
