Phoenix's POV
"It's nice to finally meet you properly. My name is Sam, Kaine's younger brother" the boy smiled.I stared at him. Yes, he looks a lot like Kaine, more so than I realised before. Spooky. Not that I can comment, I am a twin, after all.
"So... you just gonna stare at me, or do you want to grab some food?"
Considering my options, I sighed and shuffled off the bed. I can't fight on an empty stomach, so I guess I have no choice.
I followed the smaller boy to the a large dining room, where lots of other shifters were already eating. At least, I assume they're shifters. I slowed, guessing that I'd be eating here with them.
"Come on, keep walking. You're not eating in here, we're going to sit in a separate room and have a private chat" the young shifters' tone was pleasant enough, but his words made me shudder. What will this 'chat' involve?
The carefree chatter of the shifters died down as Sam led me past, an eerie silence settling in its place. They all stared as I followed Sam, but nobody said a word.
"Why did they fall silent?" I asked Sam when we were out of earshot, curious. I know very little about shifters, and expanding my knowledge seems like a good use of my time as a prisoner. Even if that time isn't very long.
"Kaine forbade them from speaking in my presence, unless I speak to them first and have a good reason. He's very protective over me, but it gets rather lonely. Enough questions for now though, come, sit down" he said, gesturing to the seat furthest away
I did as I was told, sitting in front of a plate of food that had been left, presumably for me. Sam watched me intently as I picked up my knife and fork, before putting the utensils down again. Does this boy think I'm stupid?
I muttered a quick chant under my breath, and my suspicions were confirmed. Ha, nice try shifters, but father taught me better than to fall for cheap tricks.
"Swap plates with me" I demanded, folding my arms. Sam narrowed his eyes.
"Why? They're exactly the same"
"I don't trust you. And my father taught me to identify certain compounds in drugs that can be... problematic for warlocks" I replied smugly. "And I've decided I'm not hungry, so I'll be taking my leave now. Later"
I got up from my seat and began to walk away, but Sam grabbed my arm. "You shouldn't try and leave, you know. I don't necessarily agree with my brothers' methods, but I want him to be happy. And don't underestimate me. I'll do what it takes to stop you from leaving. Now do as you're told and eat"
I stared at him, confused when he burst into a fit of giggles. "You should have seen your face! I love scaring people, sort of a pastime of mine. Apologies"
Sam chuckled and swapped our plates, before he began to eat. Um... can someone explain to me what just happened? This kid is a new kind of special...
"Drug doesn't affect me, and so long as you keep your magic under control I won't tell Kaine. It'll be our little secret, 'K?"
I nodded slowly as I sat back down, still confused. This boy must be bipolar or something, definitely not quite right in the head. I quickly checked the food, but found it to be free of any form of drug, so I shrugged it off and began to eat.
When I was done, Sam signalled for the young woman who had been stood I the corner to come over and take our plates away. She kept her eyes down as she approached, and offered a small bow before taking away the dirty dishes. When she turned her back, I noticed a small tattoo of a number on her shoulder. 15.
"So, tell me about yourself, Phoenix. I want to know what kind of man my brother has chosen for himself" Sam piped up, making me momentarily forget about what I had seen.
"All I can say is that he better not try anything before I can get my ass the heck away from here, or I'll burn his precious prick to a crisp" I seethed, ignoring the question and balling my hands into fists. Sam laughed.
"Oh honey, I don't think your ass is going anywhere but in Kaine's bed. That, or being split open by him"
I growled, feeling my frustrations build, and along with it, my magic. Fuck these shifters, I'm leaving. Now.
I got to my feet and stormed out of the room. "Where you gonna go, warlock? Your brothers have met a similar fate to your own, and your parents are in the afterlife. There's nowhere to run to" Sam called after me.
"Don't try and follow me!" I yelled, slamming the door behind me. I think I'll take my leave now. I need to put some distance between myself and these crazies.
