[Alec’s POV]
Brightness.
That’s the first thing I remember.
It was bright and full of light, and I was happy. There was a grin on my face and wind in my raven hair, blowing the messy locks onto my face, hiding my frost blue eyes.
The brightness slightly dimmed around me, revealing a shady forest. Why was I in the woods? When did I come here?
My thoughts were interrupted by a voice. “Alec! Where are you?” it was a man’s voice, deep and clear. I blinked my eyes, but the woods remained hazy and blurry, like a long lost memory.
Wait. Maybe this is a memory? A memory! I need to remember it as much I can. Then that voice! Who was it? I take a step towards where I thought I heard that voice.
“Alec! Come here! We’re going to start”, came a feminine voice. This time the direction was clear and I quickly moved forward to reach the man and woman.
I could hardly make out their features. There was a splash of gold and black in my vision but that was all.
I walked to the gold splash of colour. Blonde hair? That’s what it looked like. It was shimmering.
“Alec?” a third voice sounded from my right. I stumbled, as I quickly changed my direction. This voice. It sounded like a boy, the shrillness of childhood still evident in it. Yet, it was laced with fear. The boy was terrified. He needed my help.
I tried to make out at least a silhouette in the blurriness so that I can find out what made that boy so scared, but I failed. But I had to help him. I knew I had to.
The next step brought about a loud crack. I looked down, only then realizing that the forest had cleared and I was walking on ice. A frozen lake in the middle of the woods, but as I stared at my feet, black smoke started creeping out from them.
My eyes widened and I stepped back but the smoke kept chasing me. I panicked and tried to kick the smoke away.
It stung my leg and I hissed in pain. What was this smoke? It started surrounding me, covering all the white of the lake, until all I could see was black. My lungs burned and I was coughing and panting.
I hugged myself, and shut my eyes. The smoke closed in upon me and I screamed, the burning pain unbearable.

And then. Everything turned to darkness. And I was scared.

***

I gasped and sat bolt upright. I was covered in cold sweat and was still gasping. Taking a few moments, I tried calming my breaths and looked around. Where was I? I was lying on cold ice?
The answer hit me. The frozen lake from my dream! I could hardly remember anything from that dream but this was definitely that same lake. Going into full panic mode, I got up and scrambled away in a random direction, only to trip and fall on my face.
“ouch”, I groaned. My own voice sounded rusty and unused to my ears.
I rolled over and rubbed my probably broke nose. That was when I noticed the moon.
It was so big and so full of bright silver light. I was struck by its beauty as I stared at it, dumbstruck. It stood alone in the sky, in all its glory, with not even a cloud to accompany it in its loneliness. I sat up, still looking at the moon, when my legs brushed something and I felt a bolt of energy go through my veins.
It was a stick. The stick I tripped on. A curved stick? No. It was a bow.
I carefully picked up the bow, and as my fingers brushed it, silvery snowflake patterns slivered across its surface. The wood was thrumming beneath my fingers, as if alive with life. And I felt whole. Complete.
I knew then that this bow was going to stay with me for forever, however long that may be.
I looked over the bow, turning it in my hands, feeling the humming of energy in my veins when a thought struck me. Arrows. A bow needs arrows. I need arrows.
Just as that thought crossed my mind, frost white light surrounded my left hand and an arrow appeared. I chuckled as I stared, wonderingly at the arrow. It was crystal clear and made of ice. it was cool to the touch and the moonlight reflected off the many angles on its surface. It was beautiful.
I slowly drew up the bow and aligned the arrow on it, aiming for a nearby tree. I took a deep breath and released the arrow with a flourish.
