A few days later Greg called.

"Hi Marc, I have had a look into We Also Walk Dogs, as you asked me to. I have checked their tax returns, interviewed some of their clients, and talked to some people who have worked for them. As far as I can tell without actually visiting them, it is a small Mom and Pop operation with a very good reputation. They are careful to check that their clients are legit and seem to genuinely care about the people that they place. To be honest, I am quite impressed. It is not every day that you see such genuine commitment. They have built up a solid base of clients and staff and seem to be doing quite well for themselves."

"Ok Greg. That all sounds pretty solid. Thanks very much. I appreciate your work."

"No problem Marc. It is not like you to ask me to research a company that small. Is something wrong?"

"No. At least, I hope not. Someone has made me a gift of a maid or perhaps housekeeper would be a better term. As it turns out, I really do appreciate the help and having her around. I am just suspicious as to who would give me a gift like that, or why."

Greg laughed. "You never trust anything when someone is being nice to you! I am sure that there are lots of people that you have helped who would have quite happily made you a gift if they knew you would accept it. Christ, I would have helped you out myself after you sorted all those problems out for me when I was just getting started here. You have absolutely no idea who it might be?"

"No idea at all."

"OK, I understand your concern. My guess would be one of your clients. I suppose your real concern is that someone is maliciously trying to access your business files and contacts. Hm. Not much more that I can do from here though. You would need to get a look at their files and find out who paid We Also Walk Dogs for your maid. Personally, I would take the help gratefully and not ask too many questions."

Marc chuckled. "You are probably right. I just like to know who I am beholden to. I need to show that I am impartial when I deal with clients, you know that."

"Yeah, I do. Knowing you, it probably also niggles you that this maid is not working directly for you, but is being paid for by someone else. You always did like to control everything around you."

Marc laughed out loud this time. "You know me far too well Greg. Yes, that is bothering me as well."

At dinner that evening...

"Greg came back to me today. He tells me that We Also Walk Dogs is a clean company but he will not be able to help find out who paid for your contract."

"Does it really worry you that much Sir that someone else is paying for me to be here?"

"Yes Jocelyn, it does. I would feel much happier if I owned your contract. If nothing else, then no-one could take you away without clearing it with me first."

"But Sir, I am not going to agree to go anywhere else until my contract here is finished."

Marc smiled, pleased to hear that Jocelyn had no intention of leaving soon. "Maybe so Jocelyn, but what happens when the year is up? Would you then just move on to the next client?"

"I, err, don't know Sir. I hadn't thought that far ahead. I certainly don't want to leave."

"I'm glad to hear it Jocelyn. I hope that you will still feel that way when your contract is up. But for now, I would feel much happier if I was the one who owned your contract. I would like to have some control over when or if you leave and not just let some unknown third party decide where you go next."
