goodbyes
─── ・ *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
jaerin stays silent. her throat twists itself tighter and her sobs continues to add.
she's withering and drowning both in sadness and mourn. she can't help herself nor her brother to pull herself out of the pit of guilt she has created somewhere in her mind.
"dad!" jaerin's breath strokes harshly against the air and she doesn't stop herself from continuously banging her fists against the little mountain of soil and grass.
her brother, jaewoo decides to step in this time. as the way he sees jaerin to continuously break like this is taking a toll on him too. when jaewoo steps down from standing still to crouching down on one knee to embrace her in his kind of warmth and assurance, jaerin stiffens for a second but let's the warmth to reach every parts of her.
"come on, breathe in and out." jaewoo's hushes comes out softly as his hand continues to caress her head, "dad's here. he's listening. he cares for you. he loves you, still." it comes out off of his lips like a lullaby. it sounds generic for some, but for jaerin it's all the things she needs to hear.
once a little piece of peace comes to her mind, she stands up again and takes a long inhale and exhale. "dad, it's me jaerin. it's been awhile isn't it? i know that it's been almost a decade since i visited you."
jaerin stops momentarily and she tilts her head back to jaewoo as her eyes glistens with doubt.
out of all the things jaewoo could've done, he chooses to give her a faint smile. telling her that it's okay to breakdown once in a while afterwards.
"you know, every time i see cassy lying around in my apartment i can't help but to wonder about you, dad. what are you doing over there? are you having a great time? are you resting well? are you happy? do you miss us and things." jaerin finds herself smiling as she sees flashes of memories with her father under her eyes.
the first day she finally finds the courage to ride a bike. how she cried to her father about being afraid if she falls and breaks her bones. the way her father told her that he'd rather have himself getting hurt to save his little princess.
her first telescope she received back when she was seven. jaerin remembers how she named it cassy after spotting the constellation cassiopeia first out of the thousands or even more constellations out there in the empty space.
she remembers how nervous and jittery she felt back when she decided to tell her father that she chose to be an astronomer instead of following her father or mother's footsteps.
"hi dad, it's me jaewoo again." jaewoo steps in and jaerin gives him a bit of privacy by stepping back, "you're probably bored from hearing my voice since i came here three days ago. please look after jaerin, mom and me of course. it must be a nice view from up there, right? oh, and dad! jaerin found a new comet again, but i'm guessing you already know that. eat a lot pops!" jaewoo finishes and lays down a bouquet of red roses on his grave.
neither jaerin and jaewoo knows there was a pair of siblings doing the same thing as they did, saying hellos, reminiscing about their life and bidding goodbyes. though they saw them and have been watching them discretely as they sit on the hill while eating sandwiches besides their grandmother's grave, the time they spent together was lighthearted, a big contrast between jaerin and jaewoo.
"hyung, do you think their dad cried while listening them?" the younger asks the older.
"i don't think so. i think he's rather proud of his daughter and son." taehyung answers as cleans the bread crumbs of from his maroon sweater.
taehyung now knows why the astronomer once talked about her father so dearly in one of her press conference. it made him felt like he was taken back to days where his parents weren't so destructive against each other.
••
