A piercing scream rips through the girls ears and she bolts upright in bed, breathing heavily. She blinks her eyes rapidly until she can see clearly in her darkened room.Another scream sounds somewhere inside the building and the girl flinches in fear. She tears the covers off of herself and sprints out of her room and down the corridor, towards her the room where her mother and father sleep. When she reaches the doorway, she timidly peeks around the door, quiet as a mouse.
Another scream erupts somewhere close by and it takes her a moment to register that the scream was actually coming from her own mouth.
Inside the room, the girl's parents lay side by side covered in blood and standing above them are two dark silhouettes. The girl cannot make out any clear details on their faces but she has no time to react as the dark shadows turn their gazes towards her, and lunge with their hands outstretched for her throat.
Waking with a start, Rain sucks in a huge breath and hastily reaches for her neck, there are no hands wrapped tightly around it and she relaxes as she realises she can breathe easily.
The young girl sighs quietly to herself as she realises it was only a dream. She pulls the light blanket that is covering her body off and slowly stands, still feeling rather shaken. She treads quietly over to her small window and glances outside at the familiar sights of her home, Mos Eisley.
The normally busy, dusty orange streets and the familiar dirt structures are unnaturally quiet. In the distance she can discern the first of the planets two suns rising, signalling that it's time for her to start her daily chores.
She hastily changes into a white shirt, a dark jacket to keep the sun off of her arms, some simple brown pants and her well worn black boots. The girl wanders out of her room with a grimace, ready to begin yet another day.
Rain lives right in the centre of the desert town with her best friend, Myreil and her adopted parents, Renbry and Linlea. Her parents had died many years ago but the memories of their murder had haunted her ever since.
Everyday she reminded herself that she was lucky to be alive and she never once took her adopted family for granted. They lived a modest life in a harsh world but a life filled with warmth and kindness nevertheless.
The rest of the household was already up and about when Rain makes her way into the small kitchen. Their home was small for four people, with only two bedrooms, one small bathroom and a shared kitchen and living area. But the four of them were quite content with their sandstone walls and tight arched doorways.
Rain's adopted mother, Linlea was hobbled over the kitchen sink, scrubbing away at the breakfast dishes.
"Good morning, Rain," she smiles, looking up from her work for a split second. Rain had always thought Linlea's smile was one of the warmest she had ever seen. As she grew older although her smile never waned, the wrinkles around her eyes had started to become more prominent.
"Morning, Linlea," Rain took a seat at the table behind the woman as she nibbled on some of the leftovers and watched her adopted mother work. Rain watched as she used her shoulder to push a strand of her honey blonde hair out of her eyes. The sunlight shining through the window in front of the woman highlighted the scattering of white hairs around her temple as she continued to scrub the dishes.
"Are Miri and Renbry already in the workshop?"
Linlea finishes up the last dish and turns to face Rain, leaning back against the counter, "Yes, Miri wanted to get that engine fixed before you both head over to the cantina."
