When the bell finally rang for the day to end, Gerard and I went our separate ways to our lockers. I shoved my books into my locker and slung my backpack over my arm, smiling that the day in this already dreadful school was finally over. I shut my locker as I grabbed my coat and walked down the hall to where Gerard's was, but he wasn't there. I assumed he was already outside, so I pulled my coat on and headed out the door.
Once outside, I finally found him. He was standing near the edge of the building, staring straight ahead, but looking at nothing. He seemed completely oblivious to the boys that were playing a game of tackling right next to him. Scared that he was going to get tackled and hurt, and just generally wanting to be by him, I ran over.
"Are you hiding from me or something, Gee?" I giggled once I reached him.
I was expecting a good, non-suspicious answer, but instead, he just laughed nervously and clearly forcefully, and said, "Why would you think that?"
I only just met the guy that day, so I didn't want to sound bitchy by telling him, so I just let it go and shrugged. Gerard was just a weird dude, it seemed, and I didn't want to jump to conclusions. "I don't know," I played it off. "It just seems like you're avoiding me, and I don't know why. Are you?"
He didn't even answer. He just said, "My dad's here, I gotta go."
"Okay, bye then," I said and gave him a wave. "See you tomorrow."
"Yeah," was all he said before he almost ran away from me towards the school parking lot. But instead of actually going into the parking lot, he just walked off somewhere, which I assumed was his home. He was literally walking all the way home and in this fucking freezing cold weather. Something had to be upsetting him. But what? Was it something I said or was he just a strange character? I would have to ask Pete, who sounded like he knew Gerard pretty well.
