The Morning After

When I woke up sunlight was streaming in the window. "Niall?" I croaked. I really hated my morning voice.

"Yeah babe?" He said from across the room.

"What time is it?" I got out of bed and walked over to him.

"1:00. Here, I got you breakfast." He handed me a box. "Donuts."

"Thanks." I manage a smile, taking a creme-filled chocolate covered donut from the box.

"So...um...I have to ask...you don't have to answer now...but...when your dad said 'he'll come up here and make you like he has been for the past 9 years' what'd he mean?"

"Nothing." I said quickly. A little too quickly. He was about to question it when I spoke up again. "You know how parents have ways of making their kid do what they were told. He would've probably just drug me down to the lobby himself." I try to make the weak lie sound convincing. I don't think I do though.

He looks skeptical then shrugs. "If there is something, anything, you ever feel the need to tell me, I promise I'll listen. I will always be here for you, Katie. Whether it's 2:30 in the afternoon or 3 am, I'm here. All you have to do is tell me."

After he finishes his deeply emotional speech, I know he sees right through my lie. To buy myself some time before I have to answer, I take a bite of "breakfast".

"Just thought you should know." He gets up and walks to the door. "I've to talk to the boys and Uncle Si. I brought your suitcase over earlier. I'll be back in time to order dinner, no later then 5. If you get hungry, feel free to order room service. If you feel any urges, call me." With that he walks out. Leaving me alone.
