"Please, if you even tried to take me on your probably lose."
I scoffed at Mario, who seemed to think he could take on a luna, and an alpha's daughter. He smirked, smug at the idea that he actually had a chance against me. From the passenger's seat, he knew he was safely tucked away from my teasing smacks, which would have shut him up long ago.
"I'll hold you to that, then." Christian chuckled, messing with my hair. I laid on his lap, sprawled across the back seat with my heels tossed on the floor.
Mario only shrugged, now grinning. "I don't know, Alena. I don't think Christian would like it if I beat his mate in a fight."
I looked up at Chris, raising an eyebrow. He'd let me take on Mario. He knows it's only him, anyways.
Before he could even answer, though, the car turned off the highway, and into a dirt trail that seemed to lead to the middle of nowhere. It was smart, an invisible pack, but a sign of weakness. Ours was in the open, a point of showing we can handle being known in the world.
The car went silent as all our cars traveled through the forest, roaming deeper and deeper. At one point, I thought we were actually lost, and assumed we'd never make it on time for this whole dinner party occasion.
"Tell me again how many alphas will be at this ball?"
Beside me, Christian shrugged, pulling out his phone. "Last year, there were at least forty different packs attending. I'm sure there'll be more this year. Alpha Hanson likes to make a show of his wealth and connections."
Mario scoffed. "That's an understatement and you know it."
I skimmed my eyes through the trees, dancing about the overgrown canopy all the way down to the strong roots. This forest was different, stronger than any normal one. In any other part of the world, mainly one ruled by humans, the forest would be barely grown, thin trees and sparse leaves coating them. Here, the trunks were thick and at least a hundred years old each.
I turned back to my mate, who now lingered over his phone. "Don't you think having so many alphas in one place would be dangerous?" I mean, if anything it would be the ideal moment to attack to weaken any pack and ripen it for the taking.
Mario let out an unimpressed sigh. "If anyone thinks they could even try to penetrate Hanson lands," He paused, glancing at me. His eyes were dark, a scary black compared to his cheerful manner just a few seconds ago. What on earth had made him to defensive of the safety of this pack? Had something happened that I didn't know about? "They have another thing coming for them."
The rest of the ride was followed by silence. Not even as we had pulled up to a set of mansions had anyone spoke a word. In fact, it seemed I was the only one in awe of them. I knew our pack was well off, but it definitely was not as wealthy as this one made out to be.
The car drove up to the front of what seemed to be the main mansion. There was a set of marble stairs waiting for us, and as I followed Mario out with Christian tailing me, I felt oddly intimidated. Perhaps this was the exact purpose of the giant house in front of us.
I watched our men round the car and head to the trunk, going for our luggage. Just as I was about to take my bag, a chirpy voice interrupted. I could tell almost immediately that not only was this pack rich, but it was snobby too.
"Oh, Alpha Bade!" A male's airy voice proclaimed. I looked back to the front of the house.
"Walter George," my mate replied in a brittle tone. He had masked himself in a way he never did around me. I had only ever seen it when he was in front of his entire pack, and even then it wasn't as disconnected.
