38. Nick Fury's Speech
From The Avengers (2012)
Delivered by Samuel L. Jackson

Nick Fury: These were in Phil Coulson's jacket. I guess he never did get you to sign them.

[Throws bloodstained Captain America trading cards on the table. Rogers picks up one of them]

We're dead in the air up here. Our communications, the location of the Cube, Banner, Thor... I got nothing for you. I lost my one good eye. Maybe I had that coming.

[Walks toward Rogers]

Yes. We were going to build an arsenal with the Tesseract. I never put all my chips on that number, though, because I was playing something even riskier.

[pauses]

There was an idea, Stark knows this, called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. To see if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could.

[Looks at Stark]

Phil Coulson died, still believing in that idea. In heroes.

[Stark suddenly gets up and leaves the bridge]

Well, it's a good old-fashioned notion.

(To be continued...)

A/N: Oh man, I have to admit that I haven't watched The Avengers, either, so I had to look around to find this little gem. There's so much tension, especially with Tony Stark, who doesn't have to say a word for us to know his conflicting emotions about Nick Fury's proposition. It's brilliant.
