Rose's POV

All I knew was the pain, the terrible pain that seared through my body ripping apart my nerves. The tongues of flames leaping out of the inferno wrapped around my body like a serpent as the raging fire was engulfing me by inches.

From the time I had been awakened against my will, I had never felt that kind of pain. I was a vampire, immortal, invincible but fire was my worst enemy.

But why did I jump through the fire? At that moment I couldn’t remember a single thing as the fire burnt my skin and the smell of my own burning flesh accompanied by the horrifying brutal pain was too much for me to analyze why I was in that situation. I knew that I would be burnt to ashes. Burnt alive.

Well technically not alive as being a vampire, to be precise, a Strigoi, I was already dead, living by some incomprehensible force of black magic. But yet as my demise drew closer, I could pray only for death. Anything was better than the pain of fire raging on me.

But at that precise moment I remembered why I had jumped into the fire. A cry escaped from my lips, a cry calling out his name.

The cry was barely audible as my weak voice refused to listen to my commands. It was at that moment that I knew that we both were going to die.

Everything was my fault.
On my insistence he had come to save Lissa, my best friend and the queen of our world and her love interest Christian. Knowing that they had turned to evil bloodsucking monsters, he still came with me to rescue them from the den of the Strigoi. He being just a mere mortal Dhampir had jumped alone into a fight with immortal powerful Strigoi, just because I was too adamant to leave Lissa in captivity of a Strigoi mafia.
Little did I know that both of them had been starved?
The dungeon was actually guarded by a deep moat filled with burning charcoal as fire is the only thing besides the sun which could destroy vampires like us. He asked me to wait outside, in spite of all my protests.

But when I heard his strangled cry, I knew that he was in danger. I couldn’t control myself and not caring for the fire or anything, I just jumped across.

For a split second I saw Dimitri on the ground, pinned by Christian and a famished Lissa regarding the fight with glee. Dimitri was trying to avoid his fangs, trying to throw him off but he was too strong at the moment.

There was a predatory gleam in Christian’s eyes at that moment. I knew that he had no semblance of sanity at that moment. He had been starved since he was turned. His ruby red eyes were only focused on the kill. Right or wrong, friend or enemy ceased to matter to him right then.
Lissa too wasn’t spared of the effects.

But before I could help, the deadly fire had unnoticing wrapped me in its snares, trapping me, making me afraid of death. I had died so many times by now, that death didn’t matter to me anymore.

First it was a car accident from which Lissa’s spirit restored me. My fight with Dimitri when he had been awakened was as deadly as ever. Then I was shot by Tasha and almost died. Now Lissa had drained me and awakened me. It was another death and lastly it was the fire. And my mind knew that it was the final, the ultimate. Nothing could restore me now.

Nothing except a force which conquers even death and the name of that force was love and the God of war, armed with only the weapon of love threw away Christian with all the strength left in him and not caring for anything else jumped on me, deftly taking off his duster and wrapping me in it, to cut off the oxygen supply.

“D-I-M-I-T-R-I,” a sigh escaped from me.

He forced me down on the ground and together we rolled on the ground as one. The flames began to subside and I could feel the coldness of the stone floor soothing my arms and I knew as with all vampires, I was healing fast, super fast.

But I was afraid, suddenly very afraid. The fire had destroyed my confidence. I clung to Dimitri like a little child, taking solace in his warmth. He still had the half burnt duster wrapped around me.

He nudged my face up with his hands and looked into my eyes, seeking reassurance that I was okay. I didn’t want anything more that to drown in those eyes, melt into that perfection of his, to stay in that embrace forever without a care in the world.

But seeing his face and the blisters forming in his hands, I was rudely shaken to reality.

Dimitri was burnt, badly burnt. There were blisters forming on his skin as there were flaming red patches and slightly black charred areas too. Fortunately there were no third degree burns. But he looked weak and his dress was badly burnt and falling apart.

“Dimitri, you’re hurt,” I whimpered.

He looked at his body as if he had just realized that he was burnt. I touched is skin. He winced.

“I’m sorry. You did this to save me. I was a fool to try to cross the firewall,” I said, burying my face into his chest.

“You crossed the fire without caring for anything because I was in danger. You don’t need to apologize for anything,” his soothing voice wrapped around me like a caress.

“I guess, we’ll never stop trying to protect each other and causing harm to ourselves in the process,” I commented.

“Sure that is Roza,” he said as I broke free from his embrace, to face too Strigoi, who still looked at Dimitri with a fixed attention and I could describe that look by only one thing, predator and prey.

And somehow I knew at that moment that I was as much in danger as Dimitri as Strigoi don’t hesitate to drink from each other too.

Moreover if they wanted to grab Dimitri, they had to defeat and destroy me first before they would ever get to him. But at that moment, my two friends had nothing else in their mind as they began advancing towards us, in order, in rhythm, in a graceful flow like too hungry wolves.

I positioned myself between Dimitri and those, trying to gauge from which direction the blow would come.
