  Chapter 16- Evie's Story: (Melanie's P.O.V.)

I told Evie about my past and she started telling her's while we waited for Alec's flight. Alec was standing by the clerk's desk and Gran was right beside me in the food court.

"My uncle told me that when I was born, everyone loved me.I lived with my mom when I was just a baby. My mom still lives in Texas, but she couldn't take care of me so she sent me to stay with my uncle, but he died a week ago, I was sent to the orphanage. I lived with him for 9 years. Now, other than my mom who still can't take care of me, my last family member has died. Well, at least that I know of, I might have somebody," she said, finally taking a breath. Woah. Her life is screwed kinda like mine. Except her mom couldn't take care of her and her dad, she didn't mention him. Uhh....why does this sound like I'm missing something?

"What about your dad?" I asked because I was curious.

"My uncle said that he worked at the refinery and that was why there were no pictures...because he was never around. My uncle says that he said that my mom didn't give him much information. She told him that he was a cheater or something. I don't know because I was to young. I never even knew my parents," she said, tearing up.

I looked up at Gran to see her reaction. Her mouth was wide open in shock. She seen me looking and she put her hands up to her mouth.

After a few moments, Gran looked at Evie and hugged her tight like her life depended on it. To say that i was astounded by her actions would be an understatement.

"I....can't....breath...," I heard Evie mumble from Gran's steel embrace.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Gran said, backing away a couple of steps.

"Its alright Mrs. Johnson," she replied.

"Call me Gran, hun," Gran said quickly.

Evie looked at Gran and nodded.

  "Okay," Evie replied.

I hugged her next for the second time since I met her. I didn't hug her as tightly as Gran did, but I hugged her pretty strongly.

When I let her go, she started walking over to the clerk's desk.

I faintly heard the clerk telling her that she has to have an adult to travel because she is to young to fly alone. Evie's face fell.

Alec came behind her suddenly came up beside her and gave the clerk the money for her ticket.

I couldn't hear what he said, but he asked Evie something and then turned back to the clerk and said something. Afterwards, the clerk looked down at the little girl and handed her a ticket.

Lets just say that I was inwardly squealing.

They walked back over to us.

"Since she's going to Texas, I bought her a ticket since she's to young to fly alone," Alec announced. On that note, Evie smiled.

"I'll be able to go to the funeral after all," Evie said.

"Wait, when did I tell you about the funeral?" Alec asked looking at her.

"You didn't say anything. I'm going to a funeral in Texas for a family member. Why? Are you going to one too?" she asked.

"Yes I am. What's the family member's name?" he asked.

"I don't know the name, I didn't know the person very well, what about your's?" she asked Alec.

"Mine is my father," he stated.

  'First call for gate 5!'

  "That's us," Alec announced.

He hugged both me and Gran and Evie did the same.

"Now you take care of that little girl, she sure is special. Do I make myself clear?" Gran told Alec, giving him a strict look.

"Of course Gran. She'll be fine. No harm will come to her as long as she's with me, okay?" he replied.

  "Alright."

So with that, we said our goodbyes and they left to get to their gate.

"Wait!" I yelled to Alec, running to catch up.

I caught up as he turned around.

"Here's my number, Alec. You're grandparents gave me phone that they bought upon hearing of my arrival. I want you to text and call me. Both of you. Evie, do you have a phone in your luggage?" I said, in the middle, I turned towards Evie.

"Yes, I have a phone," she replied.

"Okay, we'll contact you Mel," Alec said.

  'Last call for gate five!'

"Okay, you guys have to go," I said, giving each of them a hug.

They turned back and started again towards their gate.

I turned and ran towards the pickup.

Once I got in, I closed the door. The music was already on, but I still heard the soft crying of Gran. I turned towards her.

I turned off the music and turned on the air conditioner because of the heat.

  I turned towards Gran.

  "What's wrong Gran?"

"He had a daughter......he had a daughter.....," was all that she mumbled between her nearly silent sobs, she was rocking slightly in her seat.

All of a sudden the dots connected and my suspicions grew.
