Chapter 18- The Truth: (Alec's P.O.V.)"Is that...?" Evie asked.
"Yes, that is Alec on the left of his dad and that's you in Alec's arms also on the left of your dad. If you connect the dots, you two are half siblings. You have different mothers, but the same father. While your father was having an affair with me, I didn't know that he was married because he didn't wear his ring. We started with a one night stand that ended with me pregnant. You were seven years old Alec," she looked at me and continued,"We were both drunk and I was pregnant so we just kept it going without ever telling your mother, Holly. I found out that he was married when you were nine. When I found out, I left your father and sent Evelyn to live with her uncle in Kansas so that Holly wouldn't know. Except, she found out when she found Evelyn's birth certificate when cleaning. She found that document when you were 13 Alec. After about a month, I thought that she would know, but it took 6 years. She died because I never told her about my affair with her husband. I should have told her when I left him, but I......I didn't," she started sobbing.
"I indirectly killed my best friend......I should have told her.....and I...I should never have sent you away...," she said, clinging to her daughter and her daughter's brother.
"If I told her, I would probably still have both of my babies.....You're mom was my best friend....she made me your god mother......," I could only make out what she said between sobs, but I got enough of it.
"So, I could've grown up with my sister?" I asked, slowly coming to terms with the situation.
All Martha (my God mother) did was nod her head.
"I forgive you," I said, surprising myself.
"Wha...what?" she looked so confused.
"Not fully, I partially forgive you because he could have said something too. He could have made it possible to have his son living with his baby sister, for his son to have his grandparents undepressed, for his son to be undepressed, for his son not be the main point for rumors all because of the lack of sleep, for his son to have a mother alive, for his son to actually live his life, but no, he had to be a selfish fricker. Sure, I have respect for the dead alright, but not for that person when they were alive," I said, gritting my teeth.
"And I'm not the right person that should have to forgive you. That is my mom and God's responsibility to forgive you and my 'father' for being selfish people with nothing, but lust in their drunken eyes," I stated, angrily, spitting the name father.
Martha looked down at the floor, still sobbing.
Evie's staring at me with a watery gaze.
After awhile, I give into the water eyes and pull my sister into my arms. I can feel the silent sobs racking through her body.
"Neither of us knew our father very well....," I mumbled into her hair.
We sat there for a bit, just silently crying.
Until Evie sniffled and spoke up.
"I'm living with my brother," she said, determination in her voice.
All Martha did was nod her head and say that she understands.....still sobbing.
"You gave me up when you could have easily taken care of me, but you didn't in pure fear of losing something that you never had. All because you got involved with your best friend's husband in a one night stand," she said, getting up off of the bed.
"We'll stay just long enough for the funeral and services, but then we're leaving," I said, looking back at Martha who looked on the verge of crying into a nother pool of sobs.
Then we left the room to go get ourselves some BBQ.After we ate, we gathered our stuff and left without a word to anyone.
Once we got into the car though, the silence was filled with Evie's quiet weeping.
I turned towards her and embraced her, making 'shh...' sounds into her hair.
"My parents aren't the great people that I thought they were.....," she cried out, but it was slightly muffled by my chest.
"I know. I know Evie," I said as she looked up.
"No, you don't. Your mom loved you, our dad loved you. My mom sent me away because of her fear, our dad didn't tell my so called mother that he was married until it was to late. Yes, he might have loved us, but he wouldn't have allowed my mom to send me away," she said, wiping her tears angrily.
"Okay, so I don't understand that, but he could have saved my mom from dying. Sure, she loved me, but our father didn't.....he would have saved her if he did," I said, my voice breaking a bit.
"So I might not fully understand your predicament, but I am still here. We have a lot of lost time to catch up as siblings, alright?" I mentioned, while wiping her stray traitorous tears that fell while I spoke.
She nodded and she hugged me again, by trying her face into my chest.
"How about we go to the hotel?" I asked, already starting up the rental.
She nodded her head so we pulled out of the driveway and headed to our temporary home to get ready for the funeral.
