You grin widely, holding his hand and laughing with your friends, as the lot of you stand in a small circle.
The principal’s voice echoes through the speakers as he informs everyone to pay attention. He is about to announce the King and Queen of prom. You barely listen though, and are whispering to your boyfriend, not really caring who wins.
Suddenly, you hear your name, and a spotlight is pointed at you.
You and your boyfriend both freeze, as people clap and holler for the two of you.
He moves first, and leads you onto the stage.
A teacher places a small tiara on your head, and a crown on his. You laugh as he poses, puffing out his chest and putting on a ‘tough’ expression.
The principal smiles and then hands the microphone to the two of you.
You talk about how you hadn’t been expecting this at all, and thank your friends, mentioning your boyfriend separately. You speak about how much he’s been there for you since you began dating, and how you couldn’t do with out him.
A chorus of ‘aws’ from the crowd, and you blush deep red.
You hand him the microphone and he takes it with a grin, enveloping your hand in his, and placing a kiss on top of it.
He clears his throat and begins, speaking in his booming deep voice.
“As most of you know, we’ve been dating since the end of sophomore year… and I know a bunch of people in this room who bet on the two of us not lasting… well to you, I say ‘ha’,” he chuckles and a chorus of both high and low pitches of laughter fills the room at his childish comment, “We’ve been going strong for a while now, and I don’t plan on ending it anytime soon. So, I’m guessing this is the reason all of you chose us as ‘King’ and ‘Queen’,” he questions, and the crowd answers in different forms of agreement.
“And to prove my lasting loyalty,” he smiles, his voice decreasing in volume for a moment as he reaches into his pocket, “I have this,” he grins and you almost faint as you see the small black box in his hand.
A few shrieks from the crowd and almost all of the girls in the room gasp/sigh/ ‘aw’ at his actions.
He kneels in front of you; one of the teachers takes the microphone from him and places it on a microphone stand next to the two of you.
He’s grinning like an idiot; all of his pearly whites glimmer in the spotlight.
There is a long pause of suspense, and you can practically feel the entire crowd holding their breath, as the tension builds.
“Will you marry me?” he finally asks, his voice just above a whisper, though the microphone increases its volume tenfold.
Your eyes are shining with tears, and you cover your mouth with a hand as you stare at him, completely shocked, and trying to hold back the tears that threaten to spill at any moment.
“Just say yes already!” a male’s voice bellows.
You blink in surprise and realized you’d been standing there frozen for just a tad to long. Your boyfriend’s eyes seem to have a slightly unsure glint to them now as he awaits your reply.
You smile widely, “Yes! Yes, of course, I’ll marry you,” you breathe out in a rush, kneeling in front of him as well and wrapping your arms around his neck, not a thought given to your overly expensive attire.
You pull back and he puts a hand underneath your chin, tilting your head as he leans in.
He kisses you, long and softly as the crowd bursts into a cacophony of cheering.
“I love you,” you murmur against his lips, he smiles in reply.
“I love you too.”
