‘Meet me at the field after school?’
You read the text over and over and grin as you reply with a definite ‘yes’ to your boyfriend.
The last period of the day, you shuffle excitedly and nervously as you await the bell. When it does ring, you dash out of the classroom and stop at your locker quickly. Your friends chat away, but you cut them off, explaining to them that you have to meet someone in an apologetic tone.
They grin at you with expressions that scream, ‘We know who you’re meeting, you can’t hide it from us’, but all they say is, “Have fun,” as you speed down the hall.
You walk to the field at the back of the school, and see a lone figure, a baseball cap atop his head as he tries to play catch with himself.
You laugh at his attempts and upon hearing this; he turns and grins at you sheepishly, the ball then falling on his head.
You laugh louder and he pouts, picking up the baseball, and rubbing his head.
“I see you made it,” he smiles, handing you a baseball bat.
“…Yeah,” you say, reluctantly gazing at the bat.
He sees your hesitation and chuckles, “Here, I’ll help you,” he states, leading you over to home plate.
You hold the bat in your hands, and he stands behind you. He puts his hands on your shoulders and pulls you back just a bit, then he taps your foot with his, indicating for you to spread your feet. He angles your body by holding your shoulders again. You blush at his closeness.
He steps behind you and wraps his arms around you suddenly. You almost freeze at his actions, but manage to stay in place. He places his large hands over yours around the bat, he leads it just above your shoulder and then helps you with a practice swing.
"Like this," he murmurs.
He does this once more before stepping away, “You ready to try it out?” he questions excitedly, practically jumping up and down in excitement.
You nod slowly, still unsure of your capabilities and nervous about embarrassing yourself.
He jogs over to the pitcher’s mound and looks at you with an eyebrow raised and analyzing eyes, purposely making a strange face so that you laugh and loosen up a bit with your tight stance.
He shakes out his arms and does a little dance in ‘preparation’ for his pitch.
You grin and shake your head at his crazy antics, but he finally stands sideways and gazes at you with a slightly more serious expression.
You gulp and try to remember everything he’d done when he was behind you, you tilt your body a bit and spread you feet a little more, then hold the bat just above your shoulder, just as he had.
You remember the feeling of his presence behind you, his breathe at your neck, and his warm hands wrapped around yours.
But, you blink, dispersing these thoughts and returning your attention to him.
He lifts his leg and pitches, a perfect straight pitch right in the center of the strike zone.
On instinct, you swing, and with a loud bang of baseball-on-metal-bat, the ball goes flying. He jumps for it, but doesn’t manage, and then he purposely falls to the ground, face flat in the dirt,"wa-wa-waaaaaaa," you hear his muffled voice as he narrates his fail.
You blink in surprise at yourself and grin as you see him jump to his feet, his mood changing in an instant as he begins whooping in praise.
“Home run!! And the crowd goes wild!” he yells, “aaaahhhhh,” he pretends to be the ‘thousands of fans’ watching.
He runs over to you and picks you up around the waist, causing you to drop the bat. He twirls you around and pecks you on the lips.
“That’s my girl,” he whispers, chuckling.
