"Come on, push yourself! One more! You can do it Y/N!" I say to myself when doing my workout. Once I achieve the goal of one more I place the weights down in their designated place and sigh exasperatedly. I rub my eyes lightly since there was still some sleep in them due to waking up only a matter of two hours ago. Once happy with my workout for the day I take a few gulps from my water bottle that was aside from the weight bench, which instantly makes me feel more alive. With a click of my neck, I bound towards the showers of the gym in order to get rid of the sweat.

As soon as I step out the shower into the changing rooms, my phone begins to ring inside of my bag which makes me become curious. I slowly make my way towards my bag so I don't slip over since the floor is made from tiles. When opening my bag I see my phone flashing with the face of Simon's contact picture on my screen. I laugh and roll my eyes then grab the phone and answer it. "Yo, what you doing up this early Simon?" I ask which follows with a chortle of laughter from his end.

"Good Morning to you too Y/N! I haven't actually slept yet so that's the reason why it's early but I thought I'd thank you since I finally asked Talia out and she said yeah. I mean if it wasn't for your pep talk a few days ago I would have never had the guts to do it," Simon explains to me with excitement in his tone. This causes a sad smile to sneak its way onto my facial features and a small pang of hurt go through my heart but I keep up my chirpy tone.

"Oh my god, I'm honestly ecstatic for you mate! You seriously deserve someone like her. Like, honestly I am over the bloody moon for you Si it's about time someone clawed their way into your life romantically. I'm rambling now, I'll stop," I explain with a slight chuckle on the end about my own tendencies.

This causes Simon to chuckle as well then carry on talking. "Yeah, I guess now we need to find you a man. Wait! Can I help by basically controlling your tinder for a video possibly? You know how Will has done it?" Simon asks me referring to Will Lenney, aka the notorious WillNE.

I let out a sigh then think it over for a second, "sure, but I swear to God if you make me out like a slag Minter I will tell Talia about that time," I threaten to my tall friend who I can sense being smug beforehand. A huff and then a mumble of the agreement follows through the phone, which causes me to giggle slightly. "Alright Si, I need to go now since I just got out the shower from the gym. Talk to you later mate," after saying my farewell to my friend the call ends after he mirrors my farewell.

Once the call has finally ended, I let out a long breath I didn't realise I was holding in. It suddenly feels like a weight has been dropped on my stomach making a wave of nausea to run through my body. This causes me to lean against the lockers that are in the changing rooms and for me to take a few breaths until the wave of nausea has passed. That's when it hits me in the face that there was or maybe still is an unspoken connection between me and my blond-haired friend. I've totally messed this up, haven't I?

------

Around four months after I found out about Simon and Talia, I've managed to find myself in a new relationship with this guy called Andrew and he is honestly amazing and I wish I met him sooner. Simon and Talia are also going strong which makes me happy because the pair of them look adorable together. I'm also happy because in the past two months Andrew has made me the happiest person on the planet and I've been able to bypass the feelings that I used to have for Simon and be able to give all my heart into my current relationship.

"Y/N?" A voice snaps me out of my train of thought and I look up to see Simon blocking the sunlight so I don't have to squint.

"Oh, hey you, I'm pretty sure the others will be here in around ten or fifteen minutes. Want to just talk for the meanwhile?" I ask my blond friend. He nods then sits next to me on the grass of the field.

"So, how are you and Andrew?" Simon questions to which a smile starts to grow on my face as I think about my partner.

"We're doing fantastic, how about you and Talia?" I ask and nudge him slightly and he responds with a similar thing to what I did to his question which makes my smile grow slightly wider knowing that both of my friends are happy.

"It could've been us couldn't it?" Simon asks me. This makes me have a short intake of breath thinking about how I'm going to word this response.

"Possibly, we had the unspoken connection but our hearts decided to go a different route," I explain simply to my friend as I lean on him.

"Yeah, I understand that. I sometimes wonder what could've been but we both lead almost different lives so we'd just fall apart." Simon adds on to which I hum a response in agreement.

"Pretty much Si, we have or had in my case, the feelings but at the end of the day, we would both be miserable. Like Andrew is made for me and Talia for you. But, I'm glad at the end of the day both of us still remain this close without awkwardness," I explain as the distant engine of cars pull up.

---

And that was how it stayed, the connection, but we diverted onto different routes that made us who we are. We still remain close friends and that's it. And all it will ever be...
