you chose to go to the houses because there would be safer places to hide. you knew that there would be more zombies but you were willing to take that chance. you wanted to sleep in a comfy bed and finally give your feet a rest. you saw that there were 8 zombies standing in your way but, 2 of them were farther away from the other 6. it would give you a better chance of surviveing if you killed the two zombies quietly and snuck past the others. you could use your knife to kill them silently but your gun would be far more efficient. your gun would make alot of noise and send all of the zombies after you.
