The Colors of Love

Chapter 30

Today was the day of Philip's school field trip. The school was taking the kids to Philadelphia for their history education. Somehow Philip can convinced both John and Alex to be chaperones. The two men were on the bus sitting near Pip who was playing dolls with Theo. Alex leaned on John's shoulder and smiled. John kissed his head and put an arm around him.

The bus arrived at the historical cite and everyone got off. Philip climbed on Alexander's back with a huge smile. Theo grabbed John's hand. John held Alexanders hand and they began to walk through the historical area. "Papa can we buy a sword?" he whispered in Alex's ear.

Alex laughed a bit. "Sure buddy, let's go to the gift shop. Theo, you can get something too." He said leading everyone into the gift shop. Philip ran over to the fake swords and Theo grabbed a generals hat. John and Alex watched the kids hand in hand when they were approached by a man, his wife, and small daughter. "Excuse me would you mind not doing that in front of my kid?"

John looked over and frowned. "I'm sorry what are we doing?" he asked. The man rolled his eyes and pointed to their interlocked hands. "That. Frankly I find it disgusting and I'd rather not have to go home and explain it to my child."

Alex became furious, his eyes turned blood red under his glasses, and he tried to step in front of John. The other held Alex back but he just pushed right past him. "Explain what? Love? Thank you so much for being so intolerant and for setting a horrible example for the next generation. I feel sorry for your daughter. I really do. She has no freedom to be herself. She only gets to follow your stupid rules that are outdated and immoral. You know if you really wanted to follow your bible then you would be accepting of everyone. So how about me and the love of my life don't stop holding hands and we go buy a toy for our son."

The man pulled a face. "You have a kid? Wow that's messed up. People like you both shouldn't be allowed to have kids. It's just gonna screw the kids up." He said taking his family and waking out of the store.

Later that day when Philip was put to bed. John walked into his bedroom and found Alex crying on the bed. John frowned and walked over "Alex baby whats wrong? This isn't still about that guy is it? Babe you know we just have to ignore people like that."

Alex stood up and shook his head. "No that's not good enough! My whole life I've been told to just ignore people like that but what if that happened in front of Pip. My job as a parent is to protect my son, but how do I protect him from hate?"

The next day John was at the store with Alex and they were putting bags in the car when a guy was harassing another gay couple a few cars down. John walked over and growled. "Excuse me is there a problem?" he asked.

The guy tuned to John and scoffed. "Great that's all I wanted, another faggot to come over." the man said pushing John.

This statement made something inside of John snap. He pulled his arm back and punched the guy right in the face. He walked back over to Alex and got in the car. "We are leaving."

Alex got in the car and they began to drive away. At the red light Alex leaned over and kissed him. "The way you punched that guy was so amazing. I love you so much."

John looked over smiling and he grabbed Alexander's hand. "I love you too."
