It's Jema's graduation but I still had classes to attend to and exams to pass. She already told me not to skip classes for it but I felt bad for not being there for her.
"Hello Mafe?" I called Jema's sister. I asked her some favors to make the day extra special for Jema. "Nakuha niyo na ba?"
"Yes Ate Deans. Habol ka later sa lunch!" Mafe answered.
"Thank you! You're the best! Tapusin ko lang classes ko today tapos tingnan natin kung aabot ako."
After my second class, I got a word from Jema that the ceremony was over. I immediately called her.
"Happy graduation, baby!" I said when she answered.
"Thank you, baby! Salamat din sa paflowers mo," Jema said.
"Sorry hindi na ko umabot sa ceremony..."
"Nge. Okay lang 'yon. Mas mahalagang pumasok ka. Sunod ka sa lunch ha? Gusto ka mameet nila Papa."
I was suddenly nervous.
"Hala seryoso ba 'yan? Kinakabahan na 'ko!"
"We can meet tonight na lang. Kasama ko dun mga teammates ko lang."
"Pupunta ako ngayon at sasamahan din kita mamayang gabi."
"Huh di ka ba mapapagod? Bakit ka pa sasama mamayang gabi?"
"Hinding-hindi ako mapapagod pag dating sa'yo. Pero mamayang gabi magbabantay lang ako. Baka may umaligid ulit. Mahirap na noh!"
"Ewan ko sa'yo! Balik na ko sa loob. See you later!"
I stayed in school for two more classes but I wasn't able to concentrate because of what was bound to happen.
On my way to the restaurant, Jema called.
"B, san ka na?" She said, sounding concerned. The traffic was worse than expected.
"Hindi ko alam exactly. ETA ko in 30 minutes," I answered.
"Sana makaabot ka. Hinanap ka na naman kasi nila ulit."
"Kung mas mabilis pa na tumakbo ako, gagawin ko para umabot."
"Awww... Sige i-stall ko muna para di pa sila umalis."
"Pero super kinakabahan na 'ko. Baka tanungin nila ako kung ano ipakakain ko sa'yo. Tapos malalaman nila na wala pa pala akong trabaho. Hindi pa nga rin ako graduate. Paano kita bubuhayin? Three strikes and I'm out na kaagad."
"Ang cute mo kapag nagpapanic! Hindi sila magtatanong ng ganon. Relax ka lang."
They were preparing to leave the restaurant when I arrived. Jema saw me and gestured for me to come to their table.
"Tay, Nay, si Deanna po. Deans, meet my parents," Jema said.
"Hello po." I said. "Pasensya na po kayo na late ako. Nanggaling pa po ako sa school."
I approached them and took their hands for a mano.
"Kumain ka na ba, Deanna?" Jema's mom asked.
"Nakapagbreakfast naman po ako kanina, Tita. Busog pa naman po." Just as I said that, my tummy growled. They all laughed while I was cringing inside. I looked at Jema's dad and he mantained a straight face.
"Jema, samahan mo munang kumain si Deanna. Mauuna na kaming umalis ha. Nahilo ako sa init," Jema's mom said.
"Sige po. Ako na po bahala. Ingat po kayo, Nay," Jema replied. The Galanza clan said their goodbyes to each other.
