I let the red-velvet cake completely leave my mind as I carefully tiptoed out of the kitchen, walking over to the main room.
Who the hell would be in the shop this early? I'm always on my own until 10:30, Bea never came in until then and I was pretty sure Luke wouldn't wake up this early on a Sunday morning.
"Boo!" I heard someone shriek at me as I basically jumped out of my skin. Spinning around on the spot, I saw that the person who had scared me was, in fact, Luke.
I guess I was wrong.
"What the fuck." I stated, mumbling other incoherent works under my breathe as I placed my hand on the counter and tried to steady my breathing.
I was so sure an axe murderer was going to be on the other side of the door, but I think what I got was worse.
"That was great." Luke laughed, looking cockily at me as I glared back.
You don't understand how hard I'd thought about whether to continue talking to Luke or not on that journey to the café. It's not like he had actually done anything bad, I mean, he was highly annoying, but not bad.
So I guess I couldn't just stop talking to him.
"Yeah hilarious." I stated firmly and sarcastically, steadying myself up before we both heard a different bell ring.
The oven!
"Yay!" I skipped into the kitchen and quickly opened the oven, the beautiful cake smell overwhelming me as I grabbed a pair of gloves and carefully took it out of the oven.
"Is that.. red velvet cake?" Luke asked, stopping so that he was inches behind. I felt his arm come over my shoulder and towards the cake.
"Mine." I said jokingly, batting his hand away, "I need to ice it first."
I grabbed one of the icing bags in the drawer next to me and squeezed in some of the cream cheese icing we have refrigerated in the machine next to us.
That fridge was magical, it contained tonnes of different types of icing, as well as several fruits and ingredients for cake and other delicious foods.
I quickly piped through the middle of the cake, trying not to eat any of the cake before it was ready. It wasn't easy to resist.
"Okay it's ready." I said happily, just as I placed both halves of the cake together.
I cut two even slices of the cake and picked up my own one, placing the warm cake into my mouth as I savoured it.
Luke picked up his own one and immediately grinned as he swallowed the first bite.
I'm not entirely sure why I was being nice to Luke, I guess it was by instinct, but I guess I was trying a little something out too.
Maybe, if I attempted to be a little nicer towards him, he would do the same for me?
It would definitely make my life a lot more bearable, and would allow me to keep my job at the café without wanting to murder anyone.
"Wow." Luke smiled, taking another large bite as I did the same.
Not a bad cake if you ask me.
After finishing off the delicious slice of cake, I quickly brushed off my hands, covering the remainder of the cake in tin foil and placing it carefully into the special fridge.
