Chapter One

Little girls, this seems to say, never stop upon your way, never trust a stranger friend, no-one knows how it will end! As you're pretty, so be wise! Wolves may lurk in every guise! Now, as then, its simple truth, sweetest tongue has sharpest tooth!

-Rosaleen, The Company of Wolves

************

I stared at the clock. Watching as time slow crept forwards. Closer and closer to the time I had waited for, since I was old enough to talk. Two then one more minute until I would become an adult. In this world that means I would be able to vote, in mine it means I can start my official training. Two weeks then I would be able to achieve my lifetime goal. To become an official Werewolf Hunter. I brushed my ebony hair out of my face then went back to staring at the clock. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one...

I felt a burning sensation on my shoulder as the digital clock flicked to 12:01am. The burning continued for a few more seconds then stopped suddenly. My grey eyes were drawn straight to the spot that had been burning and I gasped as I saw a tattoo that hadn't been there before. I didn't think I would get a rune as soon as I turned 18. Staring at the rune in wonder my hand came up and I slowly traced the black outline with the tip of my finger. 'Bravery' was what the rune said. I stared at it in wonder for a couple more seconds the dropped my hand and flopped back on the bed I had been sitting on.

In my world once a Werewolf Hunter turns 18 they start getting runes on their body that represents something important that has happened to them. They are usually a word that represents the event that has happened. Mine? Well let's just say that it has something to do with a huge scar that goes from the left side of my forehead to the right side of my chin. Anyway, having a rune is very special and getting one on your eighteenth birthday is very rare as you don't start your real training until after your 18.

Snapping back to reality I turned over and went to turn the lamp off when someone burst into my room. I jumped up and immediately snapped into defence mood. When I realised it was just an Ignorant guy I relaxed my stance and walked over to him.

"Are you lost or something? This is my dorm." The guy jumped at my voice and turned to me.

I got a good look at him and smiled a bit at his features. He had bright green eyes that shined out from underneath his dark hair. He was also taller than me by around a foot and sort of reminded me of someone but I couldn't put my finger on who.

He seemed confused that I was here for a moment then realisation appeared in his eyes.

"Are you Anna Adur?" I stared at him in confusion for a bit. How did he know my name?

"Yes, why?" The guy sighed when I said this and said,

"Apparently I'm your new roommate."

Okay so I'm just going to stop and explain some things right now. Firstly I am staying at an Ignorant school for 'real world experience training'. This is when Werewolf Hunters between the ages of 16 and 18 are sent to an Ignorant schools around the country as exchange students to get some experience of what it's like in the real world. At the moment I am staying at a school called Shaltons High where they weirdly have mixed dorms, and at the moment it is summer break.. Oh and one more thing. An Ignorant is pretty much someone who isn't a part of my world.

Anyway after the guy said he was my new roommate he walked to the side of the room I hadn't claimed and sat down.

"So what's your name?" I asked once he sat down. He seemed startled by this question and I mentally face palmed myself.

"Ah, m-my name's D-derrick." He managed to spit out. I sighed and walked over to my bed.

"Look Derrick, if you're going to survive this school you're going to have to get some nerves or you're going to be crushed like a bug." He seemed surprised by my forwardness but seemed to relax a bit.

"Yeah I know, it's just that scar on your face kind of gave me a fright." I sighed but appreciated his forwardness.

"Yep, I know it's weird but you're only going to have to live with me a while longer then I'll be gone." He gave me a confused look but I just ignored him and climbed into bed. I turned the lamp off and rolled over so I faced the wall.

"Night Anna" I heard quietly. Then I fell asleep.

************

That night I had a strange dream. A memory from my childhood.

"I was playing in the field with my friend from next door. 'Annie look what I found!' The six year old Anna waddled over to the boy from next door.

'What is it Rick?'

'Look, I found a snail!' The little boy held up the snail in joy but I wrinkled my nose in disgust.

'Eww, get it away from me. Mummy!" I ran over to my mum who had been watching us from the back door. 'Mummy, Rick has a snail and it's gross!' I exclaimed, waving my arms around. I didn't like bugs very much and was only out there to pick some pretty flowers.

'It's okay Annie, the snail won't hurt you it's harmless, promise.' She smiled at me and I gave her my own gap-toothed smile back.

'Okay mummy, but I don't want to touch it.' She laughed at me and told me to go off and play with Rick again.

I did but only after making Rick promise not to bring any bugs near me."

I woke up with a start and tried to remember what I had dreamt about. When I remembered the sweet childhood memory I smiled and lay back down. 'Ah, that good old days' I thought the feel asleep with a smile on my face.

Before I fell asleep though one thought had gone through my head.

'Why did I dream about that?'
