Chapter Two

I'm not afraid of werewolves or vampires or haunted hotels, I'm afraid of what real human beings to do other real human beings.

-Walter Jon Williams

************

The next day I woke up to a surprise. There right in front of my face was Derrick. I jumped in surprise and we banged heads. We groaned then I gave him a look. "Is this how you wake everyone up? By shoving your face in theirs?" His face paled a bit and he started stuttering again.

"I-I'm sorry I j-just w-wanted to l-look at your s-s-scar." I sighed. I guess I can't really blame him.

"Whatever, but next time don't watch me while I sleep, it's creepy." He nodded his head quickly and ran back over to his side of the room. I rolled my eyes and got up.

Grabbing some random clothes I went into the bathroom and got change. When I came out of the bathroom I bumped into Derrick who had been waiting outside the door. "It's all yours." I said and went over to my side of the room to tidy up a bit. I can't handle messiness. If the room is really messy then I will probably have a break down. It's just the way I am.

I waited for Derrick for about half an hour when he finally came out. "Gosh you take longer than a girl." He blushed at this and I laughed a bit. He looked pretty cute when he blushed. "Come on, we're going to be late for breakfast." He jumped up and followed me out of the room.

"Do you have a key?" He nodded and I told him to lock the door. Last time I left the door open while I was in breakfast, I came back and found all my stuff trashed. When Derrick finally managed to lock the door (the key tends to stick) we headed off to the cafeteria.

************

When we were outside the doors I quickly stopped and pulled my hair in front of my face to cover the scar. Ignorant teenagers don't realise that this scar is an achievement and they decided to make me an outcast.

As soon as we walked into the cafeteria everybody went quiet. I sighed. This happened every time I walked into a room. Rolling my eyes at their immaturity I walked to my usual table at the edge of the cafeteria. Sitting down I stared at Derrick in surprise when he sat down next to me. "What are you doing? Don't you want to be popular?" I stage whispered to him. He just shrugged at me and continued looking around. "Derrick, you don't get it, sitting by me is social suicide and your new here. Don't you want to make friends? Be popular?" He sighed at me and stared straight into my eyes. I shifted, uncomfortable under his gaze.

"Anna, I don't really care what these people think about me. And as for being popular and having friends, I hate being popular and you can be my friend." He ended the conversation by getting up and going to get food.

I sighed and leaned back in my chair. 'Who knew having a new roommate would be this difficult.'

When Derrick came back with food he stared at me and I looked at him questionably. "Are you going to get some food?" Oh, now that makes more sense then what I thought he was going to ask. I shook my head at him and said,

"Nah, the food here isn't very nice, I'll probably get something later. I only have afternoon classes so yeah." I said.

I wasn't joking when I said the food wasn't very nice and I'm pretty sure Derrick realised it as soon as he took a bite out of his 'breakfast burrito'. His face contorted in disgust and I laughed a bit when he gagged on the food. "Gezz, you really weren't kidding" he said. I shook my head and gave him an amused look.

"Come on I'll show you around." He nodded and dropped his food on the table. I gave it a pointed look and he sighed. I gave him a victorious look when he picked it up and chucked it in the bin.

"Ugh, let's go." I gave him another amused look and pulled him out the door.

************

"... and here is where I usually get my lunch." I said to Derrick when we came to a café on the outskirts of the campus.

"Can we please get some food then? I'm starving."

"Sure." I grabbed his arm and dragged him into the café.

The staff here knew me well so as soon as I walked into the café Tom the worker, working today nodded at me and started to get my usual. "So what do you want?" I asked Derrick and he just shrugged at me. I sighed at him and motioned to Tom to make two of my usual's. I grabbed Derrick's arm again and pulled him to the back of the room where I usually sit.

"Hey, what are you doing I didn't order?"

"I got you what I usually get. I come here every day, the people here know me really well." He nodded and slumped down in his seat.

We sat in silence for a while but Derrick started fidgeting and I got annoyed at him. "Would you sit still?" I snapped and he quickly stopped moving. Finally he stopped moving and we sat there in silence, waiting for Tom to come out with our orders. Finally he comes out with our order. Derrick stares at it in curiosity which reminds me that I never told him what my usual actually was. I giggled at him a bit when his face lit up like a little boy of Christmas morning, when Tom placed an Iced Chocolate and a piece of their (amazing) chocolate fudge. He looked at me for a second, then dug into the food. I smiled at him then dug into my own food.

"Hey Anna, I didn't get to ask you last night but why do you have Bravery written on your shoulder?" I went to answer him when I realised something.
