Chapter Three
Werewolves are much more common animals than you might think.
-Daniel Pinkwater

I stared at him in shock, as Derrick just looked at me like asking why I had a Rune on my shoulder was an everyday thing. Soon he stared to get uncomfortable under my gaze and finally cracked from the pressure. "Why are you staring at me?" He asked. My gaze of shock soon turned to confusion when he asked that. Surely he knew that he was a Werewolf Hunter. It was impossible not to know.
"Derrick how old are you?" His eyebrows scrunched up as he thought about the reason why I was asking him this.
"I'm 18 why?" It's impossible. How can an adult Werewolf Hunter not even know he's a Werewolf Hunter? It's absurd, impossible, ridiculous... I have to tell my sister.
Know that's someone I haven't mentioned. My sister, Sialla Adur. She is ten years older than me but I swear is wiser than her years. Ever since I could talk I've always gone to Sialla for advice. She's always known what to say, to make someone feel better.
Derrick snapped me out of my thoughts when he put and hand on my shoulder to ask if I was alright. I bobbed me head and told him that we should get back to the cafeteria for sign in.
Derrick stood up and offered a hand to help me up. As I took his hand I felt something like sparks flying as soon as we touched. I gazed at our hand warily but brushed it off and lead Derrick back to the cafeteria. I walked ahead of him but he was persistent and ran to catch up to me. "Anna, you do realise you never actually answered my question." I stopped and turned to look at him.
"Look Derrick, there are many things about me that you don't know, and I think it would be best for you and me if you didn't ask and I promise that I will tell you everything when I ready to tell you, Okay?" I took a deep breath and waited for Derrick to process what I just said. When it all finally sunk into his thick skull he gave me a heart-warming smile and just said simply,
"Okay!" I let out a breath, I hadn't even realised I had been holding and gave Derrick a small smile, noting in my brain that
I had to remember to call Sialla
And
Derrick had a really nice smile.

"Attention students. We have called an assembly today to announce something we think you will all be pleased with. Because of the outstanding results in last week's finals the school board has decided to give you all two things. The first is that, on Friday you will be having a masquerade balls and secondly school will be finishing for the year on that day which means Friday is your last day of school." Cheer went out throughout the hall and everybody had huge smiles on their faces, including me.
I loved masquerade balls. Ever since my Mum had taken me to one when I was fourteen, I had loved them. And now they reminded me of my Mum.
"Isn't this great Anna? I love masquerade balls!" I stared at Derrick in shock. Firstly how did he get in front of me so fast, he was on the other side of the hall and secondly, did he just say he loved masquerade balls?
"Derrick did you just seriously say you loved masquerade balls?"
"Yah." He deadpanned. When he saw my confused face he sighed and started to explain. "Think about it. Unless they told you who they were, you wouldn't be able to tell who anybody is! I just love the mysterious atmosphere that surrounds the balls." Well when you put it like that...
"Okay, I get it now. So what sort of mask are you going to-"
"Nuh, uh, I'm not telling you anything, I want it to be a surprise." I giggle a bit at his immaturity and stand up to leave like the rest of the school. That's when I noticed everybody staring at us. "Hey, uh Anna, why is everybody staring at us?" I sigh at the people around us and storm out of hall. Why can't they just mind their own business? They all, just had to go and remind me that to them, I was an outcast.
"Anna! Hey Anna! Wait up!" I heard Derrick calling from behind me. My lips twitched up into a half smile and I stopped to wait for him. When I turned around I noticed he was jogging to catch up to me. Was I really walking that fast when I came out of the hall?
Finally Derrick caught up to me and I waited for a couple of seconds to let him catch his breath. Soon Derrick was breathing normally and I stared at him in amusement. "Done yet?" I asked after his dramatic display of trying to catch his breath. Gosh I didn't realise I was living with a drama queen.
"Yup", he answered and stood up to follow me back to our dorm.
"Looks like we will be spending the rest of the week packing and making our masks- hey wait a minute didn't you just arrive yesterday? Why would you change schools at the end of the year?" Derrick started to shift under my gaze, uncomfortable. I stared him down for a couple of seconds before giving up, realising he wasn't going to cough up any information easily. I stared at him warily for a couple more seconds then turned away and said, "Come on mystery man we have stuff to do.
