??? POV

"In the year 994, the wyvern clan was wiped off the face of the earth," I mumbled to myself as I carve the history into the stone. "The last six mature male gargoyles of the Wyvern clan were cast into a stone slumber by a sorcerer named Magus. The eggs in the rookery entrusted to the very humans that the gargoyles had saved in hopes that their young would survive." My talon continued to dig into the back wall of my cavernous home. I shake my head as I recall the events. "When I learned of what had happened, I insisted on protecting Castle Wyvern while the gargoyles slept. Magus told me that I could be waiting centuries; however that did not deter me. Over the years, many gargoyles from other clans have come and paid their respects to these six warriors, though no human has dared to venture near the castle ruins to this day." I sigh as I glance over at the small entrance I will have to squeeze through after I write this down. "I finish this short record with an apology to the gargoyles that I have guarded. Though my kind live far longer than any other, I doubt that I will be able to survive till the time that they will awaken. I am old and continually find myself drawn to the ocean where I was born. Though I believe that I truly am the last of my kind, I was hoping to at least tell you that you are not the last of yours." I look back to the small cave opening. "Though maybe my kind will live on in yours. Only the fates know now." With that last word carved out in my kind's ancient language, I gather myself up and trudge to the entrance. I stare back at the wall one last time before forcing my old body through the hole. My scales scrape against the sides and my wings catch on the rough rocks. Once I'm through I look up the cliff to the castle ruins that still stand. "Stay safe young ones," I mumble to the night air before stepping into the sea that laps against my ankles. I let the water embrace me and let the tide sing me softly to my final sleep.
