Proper budgie care starts with the cage. You will hear that the recommended size to get is a 12x18x18 cage, but you should really get the largest cage you can afford. A budgie cage should have a 1/2 inch bar spacing, any more than that and the poor thing will get his head stuck. I have housed my budgies in a 20x16x30 cage, not all at once.
Cage requirements
-1/2 inch bar spacing
-2mm bar thickness
-at least 16x16x30, you should never have a cage that has 14 inches or less on any side.
Also, cage measurements work like this, Length Depth Height. The cage should be longer in Length and/or Depth as budgies fly horizontally.
Budgies love to climb, so the cage bars should be horizontal on at least 2 sides. Most cages have horizontal bars on the left and right sides while the front and back sides are vertical (or vise versa) some have vertical are all sides, others are horizontal on all sides.
One other thing I will mention, you should never get a round cage. They like to have corners to hide in when they get scared, round cages are not recommended.
