They say budgies should have a pellet based diet with fresh veggies, I say NO. Budgies are seed eaters, they should have a 50/50 seed and pellet based diet with fresh fruit and vegetables. They can also have plain rice, and some even give their birds plain cheerios as treats. Let me start with the don'ts
Food you should NEVER give a bird:
-Chocolate
-Dariy
-Avocado
-apple seed
-green parts of eggplant
-citrus fruit
-crackers (no, polly cant have cracker)
-honey
-rhubarb
-onion
-any sugary foods
-any salty foods
-mushroom
-peanuts
-nutmeg
-pear pips
-raw potatoes
-green tomatoes
-wild bird seed
-meat
While some people offer small bits of cooked meat to their birds once in a blue moon, it is not recommended.
Bread can be given as a treat, but not too often as it can lead to kidney problems if too much is fed. Bread is often used as a way to get a budgie to take liquid medicine.
Spray millet (see image at top) is a common treat for all pet birds, and is often used in training. No, it is not a spray, it's just seed.
Also a cuttlebone And a mineral block should be provided. I buy a 2-in-1 cuttlebone with mineral block.
