Figuring out your budgies gender is not as easy as it may seem.
For the first few months the cere (fleshy part above the beak) is pink in both genders.
At 6 months the cere will become purple in Males and pale blue or white in females.
When the budgie is in breeding condition (around 1 year) the cere will be deep blue in males and crusty brown in females. While out of breeding condition males will have a light blue cere and females will have a pale blue or white cere.
Now for age. Budgies under the age of 6 months will have big, dark eyes, and barring on their head.
Like this young male budgie.Budgies 6 months and older have less barring, but when they are between 6 months and 1 year their cere will be as described above. Purple for male and pale blue or white for female.
Older than 1 year of age male.
Older than 1 year of age female. Also, in some mutations the cere will stay puple/pink in males, but the females are the same as other mutations.
Albino, lutino, pied, just to name a few. These mutations are also harder to tell age since they don't have barring (some pieds do)Male recessive pied budgie.
