Secrets are meant to be hidden. But hiding secrets was not a good thing.
He knew he had to tell someone. He couldn't live his whole life without telling someone.
But how could he tell someone that he risked his life every few months? How could he tell someone that there was almost nothing in it for him, other than the satisfaction of saving the world?
How could he tell someone the amount of times he had almost died?
He'd told Tom.
Tom had almost gotten killed. He had been shot. It was his fault. He shouldn't have told him. He shouldn't have entered that world. It was dangerous from the start.
He'd told Sabina.
Her and her family were targeted. He was seen with them, now he's the one who's going to pay. They almost got killed; it was all his fault.
Jack had knew.
Jack had known. She'd knew the details, none of the gory bits, but everything that happened on his missions. And she'd been killed.
Telling people was a bad idea.
Hanging out with them was even worse.
No friends.
No family.
Just a cold, hard spy.
He'd been trained, almost since day one.
They'd known that he was going to be useful one day (how he hated the word useful).
He should've known that once he was in that world, he was never going to get out. There were always going to be people around. There were always going to be people who ignored his wishes and went ahead with their gut.
There were always going to be death penalties.
He was almost immune.
Not exactly.
Secrets were meant to be hidden.
That's what he told himself. It's meant to be hidden. I hide it from my school. I hide it from my neighbours. I hide it from my life.
He hated pretending to be who he wasn't. But that was practically his life now. He didn't have his own personality anymore. He couldn't remember his own persona. He'd forgotten how he acted.
Who was Alex Rider?
That's all he wanted to know. He wasn't going to be found out.
He was going to be killed way before then.
