      Nathan's pov~

Destery motioned for the couch. Nathan hesitated but soon did as Destery instructed, sitting next him on the small love seat. Destery reached out and took Nathan's hand in his and Nathan's heart suddenly forgot how to do it's job but, Nathan tried to focus on the conversation at hand. Even if all he wanted to do was a tie between kiss him and be happy he was safe and back home and kicking his ass for scaring him so bad.
"Nate...I don't really know how to say this but..." He began, his words trailing off he looked at his hands and bit his bottom lip.
"But?"
"But I'm not-." Destery's words got cut off by knock at the door. Ugh not again! Nathan thought to himself with a sigh. He exchanged looks with Destery and got up to answer the door, expecting Destery to scurry off to his hiding place. But instead he just nodded towards the door. Nathan looked at him with questioning eyes.
"Just get it." Destery said, softly.
Nathan did once again what he said and opened the door. Destery's mother as well as his own stood on his front porch.

Nathan shot a look of distress towards Destery and he just stared ahead at their mothers. Nathan's mother came in first and flung her arms around him and gave him a giant kiss on the cheek.

"I thought you may need some support, honey. And I have not seen you since Destery passed away." His mother explained as she pulled away. Destery's mother smiled at the mother-son reunion and shrugged. She hugged him next and then things grew silent. Nathan's heart beat out of his chest and he looked over at Destery who had stood and was now advancing towards the group. A tear ran down his cheek slowly.

"Des..What are you doing?" Nathan whispered to him. The two ladies turned their attention to where Destery now stood. Destery glanced over at them, a small smile crept over his face but his eyes remained sad and full of pain.  He shook his head.

"Thanks for taking good care of my mom, man. I appreciate it." His words were choked and sounded like every word pained him to say. Nathan's eyes got big and he turned to the ladies.

"I can explain."

Both ladies looked confused but not freaked out. Nathan's mother's eye brows came together and she grabbed his hand softly. "Explain what, honey?" She asked him, dragging him to the couch and sat next to him. Nathan's eyes flicked to Destery once again and he remained silent, shaking his head again.

"What is that supposed to mean, Des?" Nathan said before he could stop himself.

"Destery?" Destery's mother asked, thoughtfully. "Nathan, are you okay?"

"Well I..."

"They can't see me, Nate." Said Destery softly. "That's what i've been trying to tell you..."

"Honey...What are you staring at? You're really starting to worry me..." Nathan's mom said.

"Are you guys just going to sit here and ignore him? He's right in front of you and all you can do is worry about me!" Nathan said, pointing to Destery who was now sobbing. I will fix this buddy...i'll make them see you...The ladies looked to where I was pointing and then exchanged looks.

"Who?" Nathan's mom asked, tears welling up.

"Des!"

The ladies bursted into tears and embraced Nathan. Cooing into his ear that Destery was gone and he wasn't coming back because he was in heaven and some other shit Nathan ignored and tried to get out of their graps. When he looked up again Destery was gone. He blinked over and over. The front door stood wide open. He stood and ran to it, looking out.

"The wind must have opened it or something." Commented, Destery's mom behind him. Nathan looked out to see the outside empty. He looked up and down the road. Nothing. No sign of Destery anywhere.

"Destery! Come back, man!" He yelped out and ran outside his house but his legs gave out and he sank down onto them like his brain was telling him there was nothing to be found.

And suddenly he knew.

The last few minutes when their moms didn't see him, and hours ago, and all this month. Had all been a figment of his imagination.

They didn't see him because he wasn't there.

And the night they had spent in eachother's arms was only a dream.

He had no idea how he knew this but he knew it had to be true. He was crazy and somehow he had tricked himself in believing his bestfriend had come back from the dead.

He felt like crying but, surprisingly he didn't. He began to chuckle and that chuckle turned into full on laughter that only then brought tears to his eyes. He looked down the road again, and then up at the darkening sky with a sigh he stood slowly, entered the house, went to Destery's room and climbed in under his dead bestfriend's covers, breathing in Destery's scent still clinging to the pillows.

He clutched them for dear life, sobbing.
