Chapter One: Shaylee Amoy and Syeira Taniyah Jalon
When the letter came, no one was ready for it. I mean you don't usually run down to the mailman stand expecting to get a letter inviting you to a private academy. But that's exactly what happened. Let's flashback to that afternoon....
I was in the sunroom finishing my lunch, when I heard the familiar rumble of the mail truckle rumble down the road. I quickly ran into the house and to the front parlour.
"Mama, I'm going to da mail stand!" I shouted
"Oh, was that Mista Micasa's truck I just heard?" she asked
"Yes Mama. I'll be back soon!"
"Alright darlin!" Came her reply from the den. "Give him my greetings." My Mama was one of Kingston's best doctors, so she was always in the den learning new techniques and studying new medicines to help her patients. She was very serious about what she did, and in turn she was very good at it. Just as I was about to go out the front doors, my twin sister Syeira Taniyah came down the East wing's staircase.
"Going to meet Mista Micasa?" she asked
"Yeah. Wanna come?" I answered
"Of course!" she smiled
"Bye Mama!" we shouted in unison as we ran out the doors.
It wasn't a long walk from our manor to the mail stand on the corner. Just go down our long driveway, and continue down the street. It took us about 5 minutes to jog there.
"Hey there, Mista Micasa!" we cried as we came to a quick stop.
"Well if it isn't the S.J twins!" he said, and with wink added " What an unexpected surprise!" We giggled before asking our next question.
"Any mail for Mama or Papa?" Syeira Taniyah asked
"Well let me see..." he replied, and dug into his large mail bag. He pulled out two white , important looking envelopes with a red wax seal on each.
"Two letters for two beautiful young ladies!" He chuckled, as he handed them to us. When I touched mine, I got a funny feeling inside. Pushing it aside, I looked at Syeira Taniyah to see if she had opened hers yet. She was looking at me with the same funny look that I imagine I had on my face.
"Well come on then!" Mista Micasa exclaimed "don't keep an old man in suspense!" With one last look at the envelope, I handed mine to Mista Micasa. With one quick motion, he neatly tore it open, and unfolded the fancy looking letter from inside. This, is where it gets a little scary. Mista Micasa's face went from being good humored, to a shocked expression, then as he finished scannning the page, a dead serious stare. Without a word, he re-folded the letter and put it back in the envelope, closed the mail stand, and said
"Girls, I must go speak to your Mama and Papa immediately." We got into the truck, and no one said a word until we got back to the manor.
About fifteen minutes later, Syeira Taniyah and I were sitting in the kitchen table sipping on our iced teas. Mista Micasa, Mama, and Papa were all shut in the den, being very secretive.
"What do you think it said?" I asked curiously
"I don't know." Syeira Taniyah replied nervously "But it had to be pretty serious if Mista Micasa's face turned white." We laughed because Mista Micasa had the darkest face you ever did see. After a moment, I continued.
"I'm going to go listen in." I declared
"Shaylee Amoy!" Syeira Taniyah exclaimed "Mama always said eavesdropping was rude!"
"I know what Mama said." I replied "But we have just as much right to know what those letters said! After all, they were adressed to us."
"Well, yes that's true... But are you sure you want to risk getting caught?" I could tell she was caving in, so I continued.
"Of course! sis, you gotta risk it to get the biscuit!" she smiled at this.
"Besides, we wouldn't be living up to the S. J twins number one rule!" We smiled, and together recited:
" Do whatcha gotta do, just don't let Mama find out!"
Crouching outside the door of the den, we didn't hear much except for a few words.
"The girls... United States... Alone? (this was Mama's worried voice)..... academy... exceptional children.... Alright, I suppose." We heard a chair scrape on the floor. I looked at Syeira Taniyah.
"Something's wrong." I whispered "Mama's voice is shaky!"
"Shh!" she whispered back "That's not the only thing that's wrong!" she said, as she pointed to the door. I immediatley understood what she meant, and we quickly ran back to the kitchen. Just as we sat back down, th den's door swung open and out came a very serious faced Mista Micasa, and my Papa holding my Mama, who looked more like a white sheet blowing in the wind than anything else.
"Thank you, Mista Micasa." My Papa said as he shook Mista Micasa's hand.
"Y-Yes. Thank you." added my Mama. Mista Micasa just nodded, and turned to look at us.
"Goodbye, girls." he said and left quickly. When he was gone, my Mama took a deep breath.
"I'm going to bed." was all she could manage to say
"But Mama, it's only five o'clock!" I said. Syeira Taniyah kicked me from under the table. I corrected myself quickly.
"I mean, alright. Goodnight Mama." And my parents went upstairs.
I looked at my sister, and she stared back, mirroring my expression.
"We've got to find out what those letters said." I said simply
"Those aren't just any letters, sis." she said I nodded.
"Let's go see what they really said." I declared
Little did we know, that at about the same time, five other kids from all over the world were reading the same letters, and getting the same reactions from their parents. If we had known, what we would be getting ourselves into in less than 48 hours, would we have tried to change it?
