Rainy Day

It was pouring outside. Typically, Radiator Springs doesn't get much rain. Which, shouldn't surprise you since it is in a desert climate. Unfortunately, the weather decided to work against Mater and Lightning.

Well, more so Mater.

Lightning never minded rainy days.

Mater awoke to the sound of rain pattering on his tin roof. He let out a happy yawn, excited for his plans with his best friend. But once his green eyes adjusted to the scenery, a frown grew on his face.

"Darn it!" He cursed, hitting his tire into the dirt. Well, now it was more like mud. "Curse you, stupid rain!"

He drove into town, a bad mood hovering over him. A few of the cars were sitting under Flo's V8 Café, admiring the rain. Immediately, they noticed Mater pouting as he parked in his usual spot under the roof.

"What's wrong, sugar?" Flo asked, concerned for the tow truck. Usually he's just full of happiness. Nothing could ruin his day, especially when his best friend was back from racing.

"It's rainin'!" He exclaimed. "Me and McQueen were suppose ta do all kinds of fun stuff today. Now everythang is ruined."

"I'm sorry to hear that, Mater. Maybe the rain will clear up by this afternoon." Doc encouraged, though he knew today was going to be wet and gray. He just wanted to give some hope to the sad tow truck.

"Speaking of Lightnin', where is he?" Sheriff asked, glancing around at the cars parked outside.

"Oh, I don't think he's even woke up yet." Sally lightly laughed. She hadn't seen the race car since last night and there was no movement from Cone 1 that she had seen.

"What? Is he going to sleep the day away? It's nearly 9." Doc huffed.

"Mater, why don't you go wake him up. I'm sure he'd love to see you." Sally smiled, hoping she could cheer him up.

"Okay." Mater softly sighed, dragging his hook as he left. Oh, McQueen was going to be so sad to see the rain. He was only in town for a little while before the next racing season would begin.

Mater lightly tapped on the door, ready to see the look of sadness on his best friend's face.

No response.

Mater arched his eyebrow. Why hasn't McQueen come out yet?

He drove around the cone, peeking his face into the window. Just like everyone thought, McQueen was still passed out. Mater giggled to himself, spotting the drool that was trailing out his best friend's mouth. Suddenly, an idea popped into his head.

He loudly tapped on the glass and made his scariest face. Lightning jumped awake. Wondering how late he had slept, he glance outside. He let out a scream, startled by Mater.

Mater laughed as McQueen opened his cone and drove outside into the rain. "Mater! Why did you scare me?" He asked, lightly laughing.

"'Cause I thought it would be funny. Which it was!" Mater grinned. "You shoulda seen your face!"

Lightning rolled his blue eyes as he softly smiled. Mater was going on and on, but he didn't mind. They drove to Flo's, Mater giggling like crazy as he explained to everyone what happened.

"He was so scared. He even screamed!" Mater exclaimed. Everyone turned to look at Lightning, waiting to hear what his response would be.

"Well, it was dark and rainy outside so it's the perfect day to sleep in! I wasn't expecting to see Mater peeking into my window." He replied as he parked beside Sally.

"Yeah, it's rainy so it's tha perfect day ta sleep in and-and..." Mater trailed thinking about the rest of the day. They slept in, well, Lightning did. What else could they do today? "I don't know what else ta do on a rainy day." He finished.

"Sleep." Lightning smiled as he closed his eyes. Oh, it sounded so comfortable.

Doc punched his side, making Lightning jump and whine in pain. "No sleeping. You'll get yourself off of your sleep schedule and be messed up when you start training again." Doc declared, ignoring McQueen's whines.

"Okay, okay. Don't worry, I have another idea," Lightning comforted Mater. "Follow me."

"Okay, buddy." Mater replied, chasing after the race car. They drove into the street, a smile on Lightning's face.

"Stay right there," he instructed, his smile growing. "Don't move no matter what."

"Why?"

"Just stay there. You'll see." Lightning nodded. As fast as he could, he drove through a large puddle, hitting Mater completely. Lightning laughed as Mater shook all of the water off.

"What was that for?" Mater asked, glaring at the race car.

"It's fun! We're just splashing in puddles!" He explained, jumping in another puddle and getting Mater wet again.

"Oh, it's on!" Mater smirked, jumping at McQueen, getting him wet.

Everyone at Flo's watched, laughing as the boys continued to cover each other in water. Even the cars hiding in their shops from the rain watched out their windows. Soon, the water mixed into mud. Lightning and Mater were covered from bumper to bumper in mud, yet they didn't seem to notice.

The rain had slowed down and so did the boys. As they began to grow tired from messing around all day, they drove back to Flo's with smiles plastered on their faces.

"Hey, don't come here covered in that mess!" Doc exclaimed, backing away from the boys. McQueen smirked, driving towards Doc.

"Why? Ya afraid of a little mud?" He taunted.

"I ain't afraid of no mud, kid." Doc laughed.

"Prove it." McQueen grinned. Before Doc could reply, Lightning shook his wheel at the old race car, covering his whole face with mud.

"You're gunna get it, Hotrod." Doc chuckled, trying to shake the mud off.

"I don't know. I think you'll be too slow to catch me." Lightning taunted, backing up from the blue car, a grin on his face.

"Let's settle it on the tracks, city boy." Doc declared, narrowing his eyes at the young car.

"Let's go, old man. I'll take you on in rain or shine." Lightning laughed as the town headed for Willy's Butte. Immediately, Doc took off with Lightning on his tail. Mater let out loud whoops, glad that today actually turned out to be fun.
