I grab the plate full of strawberries and blueberries and take it with me to the living room.  In the living room, there's a huge plastic paper—for safety/neatness— because my two children, Halo and Noel, are making a hand painting for Angel.  Tomorrow is Father's Day and they wanted to create something special for him.  I got Angel to go over his co-workers place since they wanted him to hang out anyway. He didn't really want to go, but I needed him out the house.

I made a huge heart on the canvas for Halo and Noel and told them to stick their hand in the paint and lay it on there just for a minute.  How did that go?

We'll see.

"Stop, El! You're doing it wrong," frowns four-year-old Halo as she smacks Noel on the arm. Now he has a deep frown on his little face. Small alarms go off in my head.

"Aye!" I yell softly, catching her off guard. "Don't hit your brother."

Her mouth droops. "He was... he was doing it wrong."

I lay the plate on the clean side of the table and grab Noel so he could sit on my lap since he's now sobbing.  I give Halo the look-what-you-did look and try to calm him.

He's only two.

"Baby, you should've shown him, not hit him," I speak softer so I don't make her upset.  She doesn't say anything, but begins poking out her lower lip. "And let me see what y'all did."

The canvas is filled with tiny hands from Noel and just slighter bigger ones from Halo.  It's in the heart, but you can see the little tiny fingers sticking outside the heart.  I try not to chuckle.  I know that ticked Halo off.

"It's beautiful, baby," I smile at her and motion for her to sit down next to me.  Noel digs his head onto the crook of my neck as his little paint filled fingers dirty up my robe.  Halo sits next to me still sporting her pout that she thinks is working.

"His hands aren't in the lines," she whines looking at the canvas.

How did my daughter become a perfectionist?

I have no idea.

"It's beautiful.  Daddy will love it," I reassure her and softly caress her face.  She takes in a big breath and sighs an "okay."  I glance at Noel who stopped his crying and is just laying on me.

"Can you apologize to Noe?"

Halo nods, and says while playing with her fingers, "I'm sorry, El.  I didn't mean to make you cry."

Noel doesn't say anything and just sits there.  I try to pull every muscle together in order not to laugh.  They are too cute.

"We'll let the canvas dry, wash our hands, and go to the mall to get Daddy's watch fixed, okay?"

"Okay!" she chirps, her mood immediately lifting.  I put Noel on my hip and we migrate to the bathroom.  I wash his hands thoroughly as Halo does her own.

I love that she's such a big girl.

When we're done, I let them play a little and eat some of the strawberry and blueberries as I change my clothes.  I made sure to say again, no hitting.

"Alrighty, Babykins, lets go to the mall!"

They cheer and start running out the door.  I follow behind them, locking the door.  I strap Noel in his car seat and Halo in hers.  On the way to the mall, which is fifteen minutes away from our house, we sing Mickey Mouse songs, princess songs, etc.  Noel is now laughing his autumn brown eyes gleaming with happiness.  Halo bobs her head to the music and even begins dancing a little.
