~9 YEARS LATER~
•HALO•

"My Mom had this huge ass crush on your father," says my best friend Christina as she and I walk home from school.  I grip my book bag closer. "They even dated."

"For real? My parents never told me that," I squint my eyes wondering if Christina is just joking with me.  She nods yes and sucks on her lip.

"Ask them to tell you about it.  Because my Mom said that you're dad dated her for three years and then he broke up with her in the rudest way," she shakes her head. "Just for your mom. But think about it... if things went left your dad could've been my dad."

I scrunch up my nose in disgust.  The image in my mind isn't very pleasant.

"Ew."

Christina laughs and twirls a finger around her dark brown curls.  Her mascara makes her bright blue eyes even more ablaze yet Momma won't let me wear makeup.  She says I'm too young yet the other thirteen-year-olds in my school walk around with full face makeup looking like hookers.   Noel runs in the street with Christina's younger brother, Luke.

"El, you idiot, Momma will kill me if she found out you were in the streets," I yell, stomping my way to him. "Get back on the sidewalk."

"No!" he snatches his arm from me when I try to grab him. "Stop telling me what to do!"

I put my hands on my hip and raise my brow. "I'm the older one, you listen to me or I'm telling Daddy that you broke his watch."

He frowns and shakes his head muttering something but nonetheless gets on the sidewalk.  Luke follows him like a dog on a leash.  I smirk crossing my arms in front of me.  We told Daddy that it fell off the kitchen table but Noel was playing with it, dropped it and the screen broke.  We tried to fix it but Noel only broke the arm, so it was officially broken.

"Dang, I need to control my little brother like that," Christina watches them in front of us.  I shrug.

"I have my ways."

Two minutes later, our house appears on the right.  We say bye to Chris and her brother since they're three houses down.  Noel is still frowning. I roll my eyes.

"If you keep frowning the creases on your forehead will make you look like an old man," I open the door for the alarm to chime.  Noel rolls his eyes an sets his book bag down in the corner where mine is supposed to go.

"Scum bag," I growl as he walks away that stupid frown now a smirk.  I follow him into the family room where Momma is on top of Daddy trying to force something into his mouth.  The disgust on my face is unexplainable.

"Eat it! You lost!" she screams.  He grips her waist moving her away from him, fear written all over his face. Momma cackles when I realize it's a piece of turkey that she's holding.  It goes into his mouth and Daddy hops off the couch like it caught on fire, runs into the bathroom and throws up his guts.

"HAHHAHAHA!" Momma laughs and melts into the couch. "I'm getting a bird the next time you lose!"

"BRING THOSE LITTLE BEASTS INTO MY HOUSE, AVI, AND I WILL DESTROY YOU!"

Momma finally calms down when she sees us and wipes away the small tears that escaped her eyes.  I sit on next to her. "Should I ask?" She shakes her head no and asks about my day.   Noel is now controlling the tv, probably trying to get fortnite.  I run my day by Momma.

"What about you, Bud?" she ruffles Noel's big loopy curls.  He shrugs, thumbs crushing the game controller.

"Mrs. Brown— my math teacher— is nasty.  She sneezes and wipes it on her hand and decided to use my pencil today," he shivers totally appalled. "Like lady, keep them germs to yourself." Momma tells him about her days in school, and how she also had disgusting teachers.  Daddy finally comes back when he's convinced that there's no more turkey in his mouth, kisses me on the forehead and joins Noel with his video game.  My question arises.

"Momma?" I scoot closer to her.  She looks at me waiting. "Is it true Daddy dated Miss Baylee?"

Daddy coughs like the air got stuck in his throat.  Noel laughs giving him side glances and patting him on the back.  By the sudden cough, I guess my answer is yes. Momma frowns deeply, her eyes rolling.

"Yeah.  She was all over him," she shakes her head and then gives me a look. "Why?"

I try to play it off like it was a sudden thought.  But I never really cared about my parents' past.  But if Christina knows more about my parents' past than me, something's wrong. "Christina knows about it."

Momma scoffs. "No. Christina knows what her mother told her. You're Dad can tell you about it if you're interested in knowing."

Daddy drops the game controller to give his stern stare to Momma.  She gets up, claims that she has a book to finish and heads upstairs.

"Aviana—" Daddy calls after her but she doesn't answer.  He sighs and looks at me.  I raise my hands in defense.

"Look, Daddy, if you don't want to talk than we don't have to."

"Nah. Let's get this over with," he turns the tv off leaving Noel with a gaping mouth. "You listen too."

*·*·THIRTY MINUTES LATER*.*.

I don't hold back my gurgling laughter, my cheeks hurting from it. Even Noel is laughing.

"Momma popped Miss Baylee!" I howled crushing my face into my pillow to at least muffle the sound. Daddy chuckles reminiscing.

"Uncle Novian had to drag Baylee out. I swear, your mother was possessed. The woman went off!"

I shake my head. "Chris failed to tell me that."

Noel gave me a face. "Why would she? I'd be ashamed if my mother got hammered."

Daddy gently hit him with the pillow. He points at him saying, "be nice."

"So after that, you told Miss Baylee off. She left for awhile. Came back and tried to break you guys up... again, but she did y'all a favor and gets married to Aunt Aissie's man that Aunt Aissie didn't really want, and has a kid with him and that's when Chris comes in?" Daddy nods yes, his eyes drooping. "You forgave her because of the favor she did, yet Momma still has beef with her, but she'll let me and Chris be friends?"

"Mhm," he shakes his head trying to wake himself up. It's only 8. "You got it."

I nod and smile trying to see my Mom in a fight. She's the sweetest woman you'll ever meet, but let her get angry and you'll meet the Hulk. Miss Baylee had a few loose screws but I never saw her flirt or try to flirt with my Dad.

"So, what was the favor?" Noel asks. Daddy groans and falls over. He shakes his head no.

"Not today. I'm so tired."

"Well thanks! Now I can tease Chris about beating her up like Momma did her Mom," I'm about to run upstairs to my phone when Daddy stops me.

"No, Halo. Don't bring that up. I don't know if Baylee even remembers that, and like Noe said she's probably ashamed."

I groan. "Fineeee."
