"Hey, Stefan..." Elena raises her eyebrow, "you said earlier something about a recording. What recording?"
Stefan pauses, not knowing how to respond. Should he tell the truth? He awkwardly organizes some papers and responds, "Well, there was this thing I said and your sister recorded me. It wasn't important, though. Just random stuff."
"Tell me, I'm curious!" Elena smirks.
"Just some audio file of me being stupid. You're so nosy." Stefan rolls his eyes and pats on Elena's head. Elena blushes, and doesn't bring it up again, which is good for Stefan because he feels guilty about lying.
She opens up her phone to check her other texts, and sees the texts from her childhood best friends. One, of which, she saw yesterday with her sister.
"Holy crap..." she mumbles. She opens up the texts with Matt first.
2:08 PM. Matt Donovan: Hey, this is Elena right?
2:09 PM. Matt Donovan: This is Matt Donovan. We go to the same school
Elena's face tenses up. Does he not even remember being friends with her? I guess thats about thirteen years of her life wasted.
3:00 PM. Elena Gilbert: Yeah, I know that... we used to be friends. Like, best friends
Afterwards, she opens up the text messages with Bonnie Bennett, Caroline Forbes, and Matt Donovan.
Yesterday
9:10 AM. Matt Donovan: Hey
9:13 AM. Bonnie Bennett: 👋 What's up?
9:14 AM. Caroline Forbes: Hi! Who's the other number in this chat?
9:15 AM. Matt Donovan: That's Elena Gilbert, she goes to our school. Idk if you know her
9:17 AM. Bonnie Bennett: ... Are you joking? We used to be best friends with her. Idk what happened
9:18 AM. Caroline Forbes: Oh. Hi Elena, lol
10:34 AM. Matt Donovan: I guess she just isn't going to respond.. Smh
Elena, shocked that they texted her, wonders if something is up. Did Marie make Matt text her? Is she trying to repay her for breaking her phone, or just getting payback?
3:06 PM. Elena Gilbert: Uh.. hi!
And lastly, now that she has read through those confusing texts, she decides to open Marie's. She's honestly surprised she hasn't just blocked her yet, since usually when Marie texts her it's something rude.
6:10 PM. Marie Gilbert: Check this out:
*attached is a recorded audio file.*
Elena plugs in headphones and plays the file, it starts playing, and she realizes the audio is Stefan speaking, "The only reason I even became her friend was because I thought it would be important to be close with your family!"
Elena turns her head to Stefan, and any trust she had built up for Stefan disappeared.
"Really, Stefan? One of my biggest pet peeves is liars, and you've proved yourself to be one." She angrily hops up and storms out, her bun bouncing as she walks. She turns nearly as dramatic as Marie in the moment. Stefan runs after her, although, she ignored him and drove away.
She forgot one thing, though. Her phone.
