Chapter 3: Celebrate

Amelia

It's the second week of June and my first week on summer vacation when I hear Sam yell at me from the bathroom. I'm on couch and I've got our cat Toby in my lap, so it takes me a few seconds longer to get up.

"What? What's wrong?" I ask. He's standing in the doorway, looking white as a sheet.

"We need to call the fertility clinic," he just grins at me.

I stare at him for a moment, just long enough to register what he's saying. For the last two weeks my mind has pretty much been on nothing else but the fertility clinic. We even bought sperm just a few days ago (the weirdest purchase I ever made) so you'd think it would be the first thing on my mind now. I just didn't think it would happen so soon!

My immediate reaction is to start crying like a dang fool.

"Really, you're serious?!" I ask through my tears.

"It's OK, hey come on, don't cry yet, you're acting like I'm pregnant or something... I can assure you I'm not," he laughs, but his arms are around me now and I bury my face in his chest. I don't know if I'm crying or laughing anymore. I guess it's a little of both.

We're one step closer to having our family!

After I've managed to get myself together, we sit down on the couch and call the fertility clinic. It's early in the afternoon on a Saturday so we're not sure if they'll even answer. I put my phone on speaker anyway and try not to giggle as he pulls me onto his lap, nuzzling his face into my shoulder.

After a few seconds the call goes through.

"Can I speak to Dr. David Cho, please?" I ask.

"Just one second," the woman replies.

She transfers us to Dr. Cho, but we hardly have to wait because he picks up almost immediately. The conversation is quick. We tell him Sam got his period just now and he schedules us for our next appointment on Monday, just two days from now.

I'm still sitting in his lap when the phone call ends. His arms are around my waist and I can feel his breath against my neck. It's the kind of moment you won't ever forget, because you know it's when your life completely changed.

"Well now we've got two reasons to go out and celebrate tonight," I say quietly, turning my head to look at him.

We don't go out drinking very often anymore, but my youngest sister Natalie is back in town with a shiny new bachelor's degree and a job lined up, so we've decided to let loose a little and get her drunk.

Besides, it might be the last time I can even drink alcohol this year, so why not?

There's definitely a strange, bubbly energy in the apartment as we get ready to leave later that evening. We've got country music playing in the background and I can't stop from singing along as I do my hair and makeup. Sam went and got a haircut earlier in the day so he's looking all nice and cute.

It's a little after eight o'clock when we walk out the door. I text my sisters in our group chat, telling them that we're on our way. The bar we like to go to is only a ten-minute walk so we decide to trek it, that way we can both drink and not worry about leaving our vehicle behind.

"Are we still not telling them?" I ask.

"Do you want to?" he replies.

"I don't know. Part of me wants to... but it feels a little weird. I mean, would they tell us if they were trying to have a kid?" I shrug.
