Chapter 8: Eleven
Amelia
Sunday was also a pretty slow day in the Willems household.
Sam was feeling so much better which had me feeling very relieved. He doesn't get sick a lot, and when he does he's not usually the type to stop everything to give his body a break. He pushes himself too hard all the time, so I'm glad that after the procedure on Saturday he allowed himself 24 hours to just take it easy and let me take care of him for a change.
We got up pretty early that morning. We showered, I made breakfast, and then we went to do some groceries for the week since we'd been running pretty low on all of the things.
When we got back home we spent the rest of the day in bed cuddling and playing Xbox. It was a good distraction from constantly checking my phone to see if I'd missed a call from the fertility clinic. I knew they weren't going to call us until Monday or Tuesday at the latest, but the urge was still there.
Now it's Monday and Sam is back at work, so I'm all alone in our apartment. I'm glad I made plans with my sister for this afternoon, otherwise it would be a day of twiddling thumbs and wishing I had a better social life.
At around ten o'clock I start getting ready and by noon I'm out the door, looking through the contents of my purse for my sunglasses. Abby is waiting for me in the driver's seat of her Prius.
"Hey, we stopping for coffee first?" she greets me when I slip into the passenger's seat. She's got the AC cranked up and it feels so good.
"Yes please," I reply.
Abby works at Dunkin Donuts as a manager and Mondays are usually her days off. When we pull up in the drive thru one of her co-workers takes our order and recognizes her immediately. He teases her about not getting enough of them when she's working, now she has to see them on her days off too.
As we head into the city, we turn up the music and gossip about our friends the way sisters do. We also talk about our plans for the Fourth of July next week.
My mom's birthday is on the 5th, so we always get together at the farm to celebrate and eat our weight in delicious food. My mom cooks. We'll bring some appetizers and a birthday cake. My dad and uncle are in charge of lighting the fireworks once the sun sets. We're all grown up now; my youngest cousin just graduated high school, so it's not nearly as chaotic as it used to be. One of my older cousins has a two year-old named Jackson. He's the only baby around at the moment so he's been getting a lot of attention from the adults. It's so exciting to think that in a year we'll be adding to the new generation.
There'll be one more baby waddling around and keeping Jacks company.
I can't wait!
I like shopping for clothes a little too much, and it doesn't help that Abby is the exact same way. We go to all of the stores in the mall that we like, even if it's just to browse around and think about how nice it'd be if we had a gran or two to blow on cute summer outfits.
I do end up buying a new sundress and a new pair of sandals however. I contemplate buying a few pairs of shorts too when I see they're on sale, but I decide against it. I might not fit in them much longer so I might as well wait and buy maternity outfits in the fall.
When we pass by a store for baby clothes I pause for a split second, wondering if it'd be crazy to go in and look around. I think Abby notices because she's grinning a little too much.
